What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I liked the discussion about different types of plots and structures, their purpose and how they worked. This was very useful.
These guys create courses that breakdown the challenge of writing a novel into digestible pieces and allow you to focus on improving your weaknesses rather than making you do a course on everything at once.
I enjoyed the writing exercises and receiving feedback on my own piece of writing. Being able to listen to the audio lessons numerous times - while walking the dog, at the computer taking notes, again and again.
The tutor was very enthusiastic, very knowledgeable about the English language and sentence structure. I really enjoyed Nat's reading of everyone's piece of work.
I have set myself a period of time to write and I have booked another writing course.
I was looking for an overview of the industry and a way to get started. This course delivered exactly that.
Valerie's videos were easy to watch and the content was well delivered in an organised sequence and in bite sized chunks.
It's prompted me to get started, reaching out to writers I know, taking other courses and exploring more opportunities.
The Reinvent Yourself course offers a fabulous overview of writing for a career and how to begin the journey of transitioning to a full-time writer. It opens the doors to other ways to learn more and other opportunities to explore writing.
Nat Newman was a really great tutor. Very generous and with great, constructive feedback.
I enjoyed the assignments, getting feedback and reading other students' work. It kickstarted my brain thinking seriously as a writer.
It's a supportive environment and you're guaranteed to learn something new.
It was enjoyable to learn in this environment with so many lovely people and a helpful tutor.
Bernadette was a lovely tutor who had very helpful advice in the zooms. Her feedback was useful and gave me a different perspective.
Critiquing others' manuscripts has made me see errors in my own. The modules have helped me improve my writing. The feedback I have received is invaluable.
It's been a pleasure and I hope to return! Definitely do it! It is worth the time and money.
I appreciated the fact that Vivienne has so much knowledge and experience, and I learned a great deal from her. Her feedback was super helpful.
It was all enjoyable. The assignments weren't easy, but they were interesting. And it was exciting knowing I was learning this skill. It led me to the Freelance Writing Masterclass. I feel that there's a huge chance for me to get articles published.
You couldn't do better than a learning centre where the tutors are all very experienced, award-winning writers. And the fact that you can do the courses online is a huge benefit. Don't even try looking further than this place because you won't find anything better.
Grant is an excellent instructor. He is knowledgeable of current trends and considerations (i.e. accessibility and gender identity), and was kind and considerate to all students. He deftly explained all content and gave useful examples, and had a sense of humour too.
What I most enjoyed about the course was the sense that I was investing in learning that is going to help me in my job and personal life.
I have some important concepts influencing me while I'm writing now (inverse pyramid), and with review and practice my grammar and punctuation will improve.
The investment of time and money are well worth the quality of education provided.
Grant was very knowledgeable and friendly. I really enjoyed his teaching style; it flowed well and was well-structured. Two mornings sessions over two days are better than a full-day session, as it gives me time to digest the material.
Grant shared a lot of his real-life experience which answered a lot of my questions during English learning for the past many years.
It helped me plan and structure my writing more effectively.
The course is so good - it's superb!
I really needed the help that Kate's course has given me. This well-crafted unit sets the novice novelist up with the tools to attack the wilderness within which you can find yourself.
I enjoyed the structure, Kate's magic, her storytelling, dipping into her books. She opens up magical worlds.
As a teacher of English and Literature for many years I have always believed in encouraging my students to believe in themselves. I think words of encouragement and support to believe in yourself as a beginner are so very much needed for the student. It's like visiting Florence - you are overwhelmed with the richness of the visit or the course. It's so magnificent you are overcome with the wealth of knowledge. Thank you so much.
I really found it wonderful. Please try it if you are feeling a little lost and need help. AWC will go out of their way to help you.
I have had the aspiration to write for a long time. I have wanted to write about loss since 2011. It never happened till I signed up for a course last November. But excuses seem to be my motto. Procrastination is another. So this course seemed the right one to re-start with.
I enjoyed realising my goal might be achievable. I'm convinced that I can start. It doesn't have to be perfect.
I really enjoyed the course and learnt so much from the modules, giving feedback and the feedback from Nat and the other students.
Nat is an absolutely wonderful human. Her energy is so positive, engaging and non- judgmental. She made the group feel like a little family, was welcoming from the outset and really kind in providing constructive and detailed feedback to help all of us become better writers.
I'm now 17,000 words into my novel, and have the inspiration, drive and skills to keep writing and get it done by Christmas!
Do it!! It will be the best decision you can do to develop writing skills and connect with writing community.
Thank you so much for a fantastic course. I can't wait to do Write Your Novel next year!
Vivienne was extremely helpful - detailed and thorough in answering all my numerous questions.
I enjoyed (1) Challenging myself to write to a deadline and then to re-write and improve on it again; (2) The personal connections I made with my tutor and other fellow writers in the course.
The course has given me the confidence to start pitching and writing, something I thought would require a lot more study and practice.
The course is so professionally put together and so practical and relevant to the industry, it makes a career change possible in 5 weeks!
The clips were nice little bite sized portions that I could fit in between other tasks. I also found the quizzes helpful to make sure I took in the information correctly.
The information about structure - 15-20 words, paragraphs and order of information - is super helpful. While most of the course was stuff I already knew, those parts definitely had me 'aha!'-ing.
AWC courses are fantastic! The way information is supplied and explained makes it easy to absorb.
Bernadette was amazing.
I enjoyed the camaraderie formed amongst the group as we move on to the next stage. I now have support and I have guidelines to use to get work done.
You will never regret it. The course was so inspiring and helpful. It's better than those Masterclasses you see ads for on Instagram.
All aspects of the course have been helpful and enjoyable. Being able to read and comment on other students work has been great - there has been an interesting and engaging range of story ideas in development. I also really enjoyed the additional module about diversity - Valerie has a great presentation style that worked well for this sometimes tricky topic.
Nat's feedback has been invaluable. The idea of show don't tell really crystalized for me during the feedback on my work and on other students work through examples and through Nat's advice about imagining yourself in the space, seeing what the character sees, feeling what she feels, thinking what she thinks and so on.
AWC courses provide a truly supportive community and practical, expert courses that have helped me improve my writing.
The bonus 'words at dawn' sessions are fantastic and have really helped me build a regular writing habit.
I'd like to say thank you to Bernadette Schwerdt and Mark Farrelly for delivering the course. They're wonderful people and they seem to really care about the people who take part in AWC courses. I'd also like to thank AWC itself. What a fantastic organisation. I'll definitely consider doing more AWC courses in the near-future.
I was highly impressed with Mark Farrelly. He seems to be a very normal, down-to-earth and honest person who's genuinely interested in teaching people about copywriting. Definitely knows what he's talking about. His feedback style was also excellent and direct. It was also positive as well as constructive. This allowed all the students in the course to really heed his words, I think. He also treated us all equally and respectfully and didn't talk down to anyone. I'd gladly work with Farrelly again.
I loved exploring the course material online, mostly because it was clear, stylish and easy to understand. I also loved seeing and hearing from Schwerdt and Farrelly, two very intelligent, helpful and lovely people. I also enjoyed seeing the work of others and the feedback Farrelly gave to all the students, including me.
The course gave me a new knowledge and understanding of both copywriting and writing at large. Not only that, it handed me certain tools and resources I can use to possibly become a full-time professional copywriter in the workforce.
I admire the passion, experience and enthusiasm of people like Bernadette Schwerdt and Mark Farrelly. I don't think tutors, teachers and educators in general get enough credit nor appreciation in our society. Schwerdt and Farrelly are a part of this group, I think. They should be deeply proud of the work they do to make writers' careers come alive. AWC isn't just a business but an educational organisation. It truly cares about the ambitions of people who seek to improve their writing skills and become first class writing experts. I don't mean to be cliched here. Just giving my honest assessment.
I'd say go for it. If you want to learn about the basics of copywriting and what it takes to become a copywriter take the Copywriting Essentials course. There's nothing to lose. And your tutors will be there with you every step of the way.
I was attracted to the practical nature and industry 'know-how' aspects of getting started as a freelance writer - although I have an Arts degree majoring in writing, and have worked in corporate copy / content writing roles, I had no idea how to pursue writing for a more personal and creative purpose.
Vivienne is extremely knowledgeable in regards to freelancing and how the industry works so was able to provide us with plenty of great advice around some of the 'do's and don't's', and the individual feedback she provided was quite thorough and encouraging.
The 'hands-on' nature of the course was really helpful, and I also enjoyed how scaffolded the content was, which made it feel very achievable.
I feel more equipped with the tools I need to produce the type of writing that I'm interested in, and as a result feel much more motivated.
Freelancing is definitely about persistence, but also about knowing the publication and audience - you could be an amazing writer but if you don't get the pitch right then it doesn't matter!
Practical, easy to understand courses supported by an experienced tutor with great industry knowledge.
Thank you - it's been great!
I have learnt so much from this course and, as I am doing a PhD in Creative Writing Non-fiction at the moment, it has been so helpful to me.
I enjoyed Kate Forsyth's ability to bring the text to life by showing and explaining so many different ways of seeing, hearing and even feeling a text.
The Australian Writers' Centre course I attended, History, Mystery and Magic by Kate Forsyth, was an extremely well-researched and presented course. It was also affordable as I was able to use Afterpay. I am looking forward to attending more courses in the future.
The idea of plotting and planning a novel was a big attraction. I've always written whenever inspiration strikes, which often leads to long stretches without creativity. Now, I want to establish a more consistent writing routine.
I love how Kate's deep knowledge of art seamlessly complements her content. Her insights into artists and their paintings often create meaningful connections to the text excerpts we study, whether they relate to the writers themselves or the characters in their stories.
I've learned so much about different narrative structures, plot points, and how to create dramatic tension. Breaking down the novel-writing process into achievable goals, like setting word counts and chapter targets, has made everything feel more manageable. I'm excited to start planning my writing with all this new knowledge!
The Plotting and Planning course offers practical techniques to help you plot your novel from start to finish, all at your own pace. Perfect for any writer looking to master the art of storytelling and ensure their narrative stays compelling. Highly recommended!
I found the course really practical and encouraging. Vivienne was a professional, supportive and conscientious tutor, with very direct feedback and plenty of useful practical experience to draw on.
It has given me the confidence to pitch my story ideas to editors and seek to make a part time income - ie, that it is possible!
A useful, practical course for anyone who wants to earn an income from freelance writing.
Thanks to Vivienne for her really useful, experience-based advice.
