AWC Creative Writing Program

From your first interest in writing to a finished draft

If you’ve ever thought about writing – or started but struggled to keep going – you’ll know that the challenge isn’t just learning the craft.

It’s knowing how to progress. What to focus on next. And how to turn early enthusiasm into something sustained and complete.
The AWC Creative Writing Program is designed to guide you through that entire journey – from your first interest in writing through to a polished draft of your novel.
Each course builds on the last, giving you the structure, feedback and direction to keep moving forward with confidence.

01

Build the foundations that make your writing work

This is where everything begins.
In Creative Writing Stage 1, you learn the core elements of storytelling – character, structure, voice and scene – and how they function on the page. It’s practical and hands-on, so you’re not just learning concepts, you’re applying them immediately.
By the end, you’re no longer guessing. You understand what makes writing effective – and you can start writing with confidence.

Why move to Creative Writing Stage 2?

Because once you have the foundations, the next step is to stop working in fragments – and start something of your own.

02

Start your story and move beyond exercises

This is where your writing becomes more than practice.
In Stage 2, you begin shaping your own piece of writing, working towards your first 3,000 words. You’ll apply the techniques you’ve learned in a more sustained way, while developing your ability to build scenes and maintain flow.
It’s the transition from learning skills to using them in a real piece of writing.

Why move to Novel Writing Essentials?

Because starting is only part of the challenge. The next step is developing your idea into something that holds together and keeps moving.

03

Build momentum and grow your story to 20,000 words

Now your focus shifts to progress.
In Novel Writing Essentials, you develop your idea into a more substantial piece of writing. You’ll refine your concept, strengthen your structure, and build momentum as your word count grows to around 20,000 words.
This is where your story starts to take shape as a novel – not just a promising beginning, but something with direction and continuity.

Why move to Write Your Novel?

Because reaching 20,000 words is a major step – but finishing requires a different level of consistency, structure and support.

04

Carry your story through to a complete first draft

This is where you follow through.
In Write Your Novel, the focus is on sustaining your narrative over the full length of a manuscript. You’ll work through the challenges that come with longer-form writing – pacing, structure, and keeping your story cohesive – with ongoing guidance and feedback.
By the end, you’ll have achieved something significant: a complete first draft of your novel.

Why move to Edit Your Novel?

Because a first draft is only the beginning.
Once your story is down on the page, the next step is refining it – strengthening structure, sharpening your writing, and shaping it into something more polished and complete.

Editing requires a different mindset and a more deliberate process, and that’s exactly what the next course is designed to support.

05

Refine your draft into a polished manuscript

This is where your writing reaches its full potential.
In Edit Your Novel, you shift from writing to refining – working through your draft with a more critical, structured approach. Over six months, you’ll reshape, strengthen and polish your manuscript with detailed feedback and guided editing.
This is where you move beyond a finished draft – and develop a manuscript you can feel confident sharing, submitting or pursuing further.

A complete writing journey - from start to finished manuscript

Each course is designed to meet you where you are – and give you a clear next step.

You’re not left wondering what to do next, or trying to piece it together on your own.

Instead, you move through a structured progression that builds:

  • confidence in your writing
  • momentum in your story
  • and ultimately, a complete and polished manuscript
