Sydney meet-up with Candice Fox

Who is speaking at this event:

Candice Fox is the bestselling crime and thriller writer behind the novel Hades, which won the prestigious Ned Kelly Award in 2014. Its sequel, Eden, was published in January 2015 and won the Ned Kelly Award in 2015. Book three in the series, Fall, will be released December 2015. So we will be talking to Candice about her writing process on the eve of her big book launch.

Hades and Eden are international bestsellers – already translated into four languages, they hit the US shelves this year. Candice is also the creator of our über-popular course, Anatomy of a Crime: How to Write About Murder where she delves into the mind of psychopaths and serial killers, both real and fictional. Students interested in reading or writing about crime are loving this self-paced on-demand course.

Candice's books

Candice has two undergraduate and two postgraduate degrees. Her Honours degree is in Creative Writing, and she holds a Masters in Writing, Editing and Publishing.

Candice is passionate about the genre of crime writing. Growing up in a large, eccentric family from Sydney’s western suburbs, Candice is the daughter of a parole officer at one of Sydney’s biggest prisons and an enthusiastic foster-carer. She spent her childhood listening around corners to tales of violence, madness and evil as her father relayed his work stories to her mother and older brothers.

As a cynical and trouble-making teenager, her crime and gothic fiction writing was an escape from the calamity of her home life. She was constantly in trouble for reading Anne Rice in church and scaring her friends with tales from Australia’s wealth of true crime writers.

She started raiding her mother’s true crime collection as a young girl and quickly became addicted to the dark side.

Bankstown born and bred, she failed to conform to military life in a brief stint as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy at age eighteen. At 20, she turned her hand to academia, and now teaches creative writing.

What is the purpose of this event?

Our November event is part of our 10th birthday celebrations and follows many years of networking get-togethers where our talented graduates can meet each other, share stories and hear from a relevant speaker.

The key aim of this event is to network and get to know other writers (and have fun!). While a speaker will share their journey as a writer, or experience in the publishing industry, this event is not a formal training session.

Ticket cost is $10, and proceeds are directly donated to charity. For this event, the funds are going to Doggie Rescue: a no-kill shelter that rescues and re-homes abandoned dogs from Sydney’s pounds.

As the proceeds go directly to charity, the ticket price is non-refundable even if you are unable to attend.

Who is the organiser?

This event is organised by the Australian Writers’ Centre as a service to graduates and the writing community.
