When our students study Magazine and Newspaper Writing or Travel Writing, they learn that you can often turn one idea or destination into many stories. Someone who took this concept and ran with it was graduate Lilani Goonesena, turning a tour into no less than EIGHT stories. Lilani did our Food Writing course in May with Carli Ratcliff, and found it both “inspirational and supportive” – following it up with a foodie famil to Tasmania for website Appetite for Excellence, for whom she wrote those eight stories.
She had the wine angles covered with a profile on Stoney Rise (not your average winemaker) and innovation in wine making. Next she explored Mount Gnomon’s pigs, shucked up a storm with Cameron’s Oysters and investigated aquaculture. Then it was off to Cloudy Bay to see the sheep and saying cheese with two different angles – one on vertical cheese tastings and another looking at happy cows making happy cheese! Now while this was part of a foodie assignment, there’s nothing to stop you creating your own ‘feature story itinerary’ for your next trip!
Meanwhile, Marianne Diaz popped up on Mamamia with a wonderful insight into the mindset of foster carers – and how it can be difficult to give the child back, which encouraged some healthy discussion and sharing from those in similar situations. Great work Marianne – articles where commenters are thanking you for doing the story are always great!
Another we saw recently were Trisha Bui, who explored some local tourism with the Bohemian brilliance of Melbourne’s inner fringe for Royal Auto, the RACV's glossy magazine. You can read it online here. A very enjoyable ramble through Richmond, cruise through Collingwood or Fitzroy by foot – well done Trisha!
And finally, to finish this feature-publishing themed post, Katherine Sellers’ lyrical report on the wonders of Coral Bay not only graced the online pages of Mildred, but looked super stunning thanks to that website’s glorious way it deals with pictures! Katherine and Trisha are excellent examples of finding a home for your travel articles beyond the obvious “travel section of the newspaper” mentality!
If you have had something published or any other writing win, let us know! We’ll give you a shout out so the world can share in your success. Keep 'em coming!
