What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
The course gave me more ideas about how to develop characters as well as insight into why I am drawn to some characters in books that I have read.
The AWC care enough about writing to teach about it and use relevant examples from their own experiences. Get connected!
The feedback from Bernadette was superb, really in-depth feedback, which gives you a really good understanding of what you did well and what you did particularly well. This helps you to focus.
Bernadette has a very relatable and comfortable way of talking to you which makes it all sound so easy.
I find learning a new skill a lot of fun, and this course was fun. The courses give you confidence and the framework makes it easier to write.
The handouts are great - keeps you on track. It helped to develop a couple of my manuscripts.
AWC has great courses - they are quite essential if you are starting out with no prior knowledge. The courses are really worthwhile.
I really enjoyed how the course was self-paced, which allowed me to complete the modules as I pleased and enabled me to easily fit it in around other commitments. I also liked the interactive videos, PDF examples which were very helpful and finally, the extra modules on next steps forward. I found all of this very helpful.
It's given me a greater understanding of the different content writing angles which will help me immensely in those times when I'm struggling to come up with content ideas.
I would recommend this course because it's self-paced, you can do it how you want to do it and there are very useful tips and examples you can refer to which makes the course easy to follow and apply in real life.
I find myself having strong opinions about various issues. The feelings partying with these opinions needed to be tamed by well-constructed, logical processes before I'd be able to put pen to paper. I'd read lots of Vivienne's work and knew the course would be excellent.
Loved seeing Vivienne's face on screen and the excellent feedback on assignments. It was great to hear feedback on everyone else's assignment's as well. Vivienne is very engaging and supportive but honest in her feedback.
Modules were interesting. Vivienne's use of examples was awesome. Loved the guest speakers/interviews.
This course in particular was excellent. It went beyond the subject matter. At AWC you feel part of a community that cheers you on! The free seminars are wonderful and give you a taste of the course tutors. I feel a sense of belonging and that I can really dare to dream to do this writing thing!
Cathie is clearly very knowledgeable about the industry and I really valued her insight and feedback on my assignments.
It gave me the confidence to write not one, but two picture books that I can now work on polishing. I'm definitely going to pursue writing picture books and am really looking forward to the next steps!
I highly recommend the Australian Writers' Centre as the tutors really know what they're talking about and give great insights into the industry. The workload for this course was very manageable (even with two small children!) while still keeping me accountable and pushing me to finish drafts.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course, thank you :)
I like the idea of self-publishing children's picture books.
Very glad I purchased the course! Very informative. Being self-paced, I could do the course when it suited me.
I had Scrivener a couple of years ago, but found it onerous to adopt. I purchased it recently with a view to learning how to use it to assist my writing. I think Natasha is a brilliant facilitator of this training because she is a successful, published author who uses the tool successfully.
Most enjoyable was the capacity to work through it with my Scrivener open - practicing each new skill as I went.
Scrivener is like outsourcing your executive function as you tap into your creative flow. I would highly recommend this course.
Pamela's relaxed manner and her simple presentation made it all easy to understand.
I keep thinking I've learnt just about everything about writing for children, and then I discover there's something new to learn. I get quite excited each time I learn something new.
Through the three Focus On seminars I've watched Pamela present so far, I've felt like I can't write enough notes. She offers an incredible wealth of knowledge that have already vastly improved my understanding of solid novel writing.
What I thought was the climax and resolution of my story has completely changed. I'm confident in the story itself as being one people will find interesting - but the seminar has really encouraged me to reassess the message I thought I was giving. It's given a good story greater depth.
If you have a chance to take part in a seminar with Pamela, you absolutely must.
It has helped me build my confidence and I feel more ready and prepared to submit my stories to publishers.
It is a fun and honest course in helping people become picture book authors.
It was brilliant. So brilliant in fact, I've just signed up to do it all again!
The way the prompts were written was so effective. Every day, I felt like there was someone who understood what it's like to try and develop a writing habit encouraging me to keep going. It worked too - it turns out that I can write just over a thousand words in 30 minutes.
To put it simply, I'm developing a writing habit. That is amazing, and wonderful, and miraculous!
The Australian Writers' Centre provides everything you need to start your career as writer. It provides the support you need while you're learning the basic concepts. It helps you develop an effective writing habit once you have an idea of what you need to do, and when you're ready to fly, the AWC's there to provide you with amazing advanced courses to send your writing to the next level.
I've worked on my character(s) quite a bit, and on the plot, story arc and now focussed on narrative tension. But suddenly realised that I was neglecting to look at how I was building this world!
I was very interested to hear what Pamela had to say about world-building in general, and how to weave this into character development. The best part was learning more about how to reveal the world by having the character(s) interact with it.
I enjoyed listening to the recording and, in fact, found it useful to be able to listen a few times to various parts to make sure I understood (and take notes). Thanks so much for the helpful notes and slides.
This will definitely have an impact on how I approach building the world of my story.
If you have a desire to write a short story or even a novel, the Australian Writers' Centre offers keys to unlock your dream with practical courses on all aspects of writing. Do yourself a favour and make a start by enrolling in any one of these. You won't regret it.
Thanks again for a really enjoyable and useful seminar. I'll be keeping an eye out for any more of these in future.
Bernadette came across as a person who valued her students' chosen path of writing. Plus she was always encouraging.
I enjoyed listening to the lectures as well as doing the assignments. A great start to a career in writing.
I had written several books, but knew they were not of publishable standard. Mostly, I wanted to structure them better and to have a deeper understanding of just what I was doing when I was editing.
I am glad that we can keep accessing the material and refreshing what we have learned. I plan to continue going back over the tutorial sessions whenever I am at an impasse.
Nat is very knowledgeable and she is skilled at getting that knowledge and her ideas across. She is also personable and encouraging.
I enjoyed anticipating the next module release each week so I could learn more, and reading other people's submissions. I loved hearing Nat's feedback and suggestions for improvement, not just to mine, but to the writing of others. I learned a lot from that.
I have incentive and tools to sink my teeth into some serious objective editing of my work, tools which I will add to and polish through other courses when the time is ripe.
Really enjoyed it and feel I have the building blocks to get started now.
Nat's feedback was great - positive, constructive and enthusiastic. She's really given me the confidence that I can write and be creative. Thanks Nat!
I enjoyed the assignments - every Monday I'd read the brief and worry that I wouldn't be able to meet it. Once I started thinking about it, the ideas and words flowed and the sense of satisfaction I got once I clicked submit and again hearing Nat's feedback was well worth the effort put in!
Very informative, easy to fit it into busy schedules and value for money. Thank you!
The content of the course seemed like just what I need to progress and re-edit my manuscript that has been 5 years in the making! As it is my first manuscript and I'm not a professional writer, I felt that I needed some guidance to edit to an acceptable standard before I look for agents/publishers.
I was initially concerned that I might not have been able to complete it with the personal commitments I have - but it has been amazing. I am proud that I have been able to complete each task before the due date.
It was simple and easy to follow along - the audio lessons were great and easy to follow. The assignments were easy and simple and not too difficult to complete.
Nat was amazing and spot on - I really enjoyed receiving her feedback.
Made me open my eyes to the style of writing I had used in writing my manuscript. It has definitely shown me that I need to re-edit it and make some major changes to the wording, style and POV I have used.
Bernadette is a greater speaker / presenter with an ability to deliver the content in a simple yet effective way. Her assignment feedback was great and her extra tips in response to course comments was appreciated.
Pamela is a fantastic presenter and she is amazing with her time keeping too. Today I was already imagining and researching my world.
AWC has an amazing choice of workshops available. I've completed a range. My appetite for courses increases as I learn more and develop my skills. AWC is a fun, friendly and supportive environment for anyone interested in writing.
Thank you for continuing to offer amazing courses. I feel enthusiastic about writing.
A well-structured course covering the fundamental principles of good business writing. I enjoyed the cohesive flow of information.
