What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I enjoyed the whole course. I needed to find out more about comma splice sentences and did. Also, learning more about tense means another review of my manuscript.
Another step toward improving my story telling - thank you.
What attracted me to this course was to try something new as I've already had ideas for middle grade books - I was thinking, why not try picture books? So I decided to give it a go.
This course was awesome. I can now say I can do this and make any picture book I want to, as I've learnt the skills and techniques you need to improve picture books.
This is an excellent course and a great start to get you on track for writing picture books.
The world of picture books is very new to me from a craft study point of view and I feel like this course has given me an excellent overview.
The tutor was very knowledgeable and doing her best to be encouraging, while pointing out with precision where the improvement areas were in everyone's work.
Before starting this course, I had a number of story ideas that I felt would work best as picture books but wasn't sure how to develop them. I now feel like I have the confidence to take the next step.
This course was a really great introduction and I totally think you should do it. It's taken away my hesitation to get started on picture books.
I thought the course delivery was fantastic. I particularly liked that the audio was split into 15-minute sessions. I found the way the modules focused on the primary parts of content right on the money.
I started this course wondering if setting up my own freelance copywriting business was something I could do, and I've finished the course *knowing* that that's what I'm going to do.
Bernadette is knowledgeable, she's an excellent speaker, but most of all her advice is practical and really, really useful in helping me to work out the approach I need to take.
The AWC is the best place to find excellent writing courses run by experienced industry professionals, full of practical advice.
I have always had ideas for and around writing a children's book, but no idea where to start. I finally decided to commit to a course to give me some directions. Of all the courses I searched online, this was the best fit for me. It was online and in my own time, a great price, and great content.
I was worried I would be out of my depth (being older and having not studied for years), and that I would give up. But I found the course and assignments were broken down into good sized chunks of info, and led into the new session well.
I felt encouraged by the tutor and fellow classmates. The chat was great. The lessons were easy to understand and have good information, tasks, and reference material. And the feedback was relevant and encouraging, and greatly appreciated.
I enjoyed the assignments in which we had to submit work of our own for feedback. It tested me! But I was able to draw on the lessons for guidance and direction, and always waited eagerly for Cathie's feedback. And the feedback was valuable.
I now feel like I have direction and can use a methodical approach to finishing a book. It gave me different ideas on how to approach writing. I have always scribbled notes about story ideas but never used them, but the course reaffirmed to me that this is a good practice.
The course content is great. The tutor was amazing helpful. The class chat was a welcoming and supportive environment. And the bonus sessions are a must do!
Thanks for an enjoyable course!
Bernadette seemed expert in all things copywriting, though was also very down-to-earth in her presentation style and very generous with her personalised feedback.
I enjoyed the industry-related examples in the coursework and the challenge of writing an assessment piece each week to apply the techniques we were learning. I liked that it was self-paced, though still with a tutor to access feedback from.
This course gave me confidence in my ability to amalgamate my writing skills and business experience. In week one, I found the courage to order a business card, write content for my own website and by week two I had approached my first potential copywriting client!
I'm thrilled to have undertaken this course. It made me realise the freelance copywriting lifestyle is well within my reach and gave me the confidence to pursue that from the moment I saw the first video. It's fun, practical and delivers on its promise to cover essential copywriting skills. The personalised feedback and the abundance of templates and handouts makes it exceptional value.
Some great insights from Bernadette based on her experiences; it wasn't just follow-the-PowerPoint training. Wonderful, insightful, very open and comfortable.
I have started a business through the past couple of weeks, some great guidance gained through this course.
Very informative for any small business start-up really. Easy to follow and not time consuming - but you still get so much from it.
I found Pamela to be skilled, experienced and knowledgeable.
Listening to the audio lessons was a really nice way to learn. Being able to go back and re-listen will be valuable over the next 12 months.
I found this course to be incredibly worthwhile. I have learnt practical concepts about writing and writing for children which I can practice to build my skills. The course fit into my busy work / family / writing life because it was flexible and accessible. I loved it!
Bernadette was amazing and the feedback was extremely helpful in making my copy sound professional.
I loved the assignments; they made everything make more sense once put into practice. I now know that copywriting as a career is for me.
I'd like to say a big Thank you to Bernadette and the AWC team for putting together such an amazing course! I've learnt lots and can truly say it has changed my life.
I would say don't think just do!
The course has given me the necessary steps to improve my website, which has eased my self-doubt. I feel more confident in working on my website.
The SEO information was explained well. I knew what it was for, but had no idea how Google and other search engines use it.
If you're building your website, this course will give you the tools to go forth confidently. If you have enlisted a website designer, this course will give you the information and confidence to answer the questions about what you want and what the designer can provide. Michelle Barraclough's points were easy to understand for even someone who isn't tech savvy.
Bernadette was really engaging and insightful, sometimes felt like you could have been in the room just having a chat. She was very open and comfortable.
Very doable course. I learned so much in a short time and the study time and workload is very achievable.
Just a huge thank you; so glad I signed up.
Pamela has a fabulous depth of knowledge in the area and shares it in a very encouraging way. Her feedback on all the students' submissions was incredibly helpful.
I enjoyed reading all the students' assignments and discovering the huge possibility there is still out there for writing great stories.
AWC offers great courses and an excellent range to suit just what it is you want to learn. Very professional and in touch with current industry practices. Good value and a great balance of challenging and achievable.
The tutor was excellent with great feedback.
A well-taught course with an engaging tutor; this is the perfect introduction to the industry and how to get your foot in the door.
Bernadette was friendly and well informed - I really liked the way she explained concepts and ideas in a way that anyone could understand.
The course was fun and informative, and I love how I was able to apply the information learnt to running my restaurant's social media. It was important to me that I could use what I was learning straight away.
I tend to waffle on, so this course has helped me sift out the unnecessary hoo haa, and be more concise!
I would say that it is a friendly approachable course that is not too demanding, but is very informative. The process from start to finish was very smooth.
The course 💯 exceeded my expectation! The personalised verbal feedback was fantastic and so valuable to learning from mistakes. Or being told what you could have done instead. Something about that format made you really put the work in for the assignments.
I loved the assignments. And having a deadline to submit really meant you just had to get it done. I loved the feedback format. It gives that personable feel and it's great to listen to other feedback to learn from that as well.
Do it! It's really valuable, you're guaranteed to take learnings from each module and have new skills to take away. The assignments at the end of each module are relevant and help reinforce your learnings from that module. The personal, verbal feedback of each assignment is fantastic and helps you learn from not only your own feedback but from others. Overall the course is engaging and valuable, I now have the skills and confidence to put what I've learnt into practice and put myself out there as a freelance copywriter. I'm feeling very optimistic about my next steps into this world I didn't consider a career until now :)
The course certainly pushed me to write in unexpected ways, also to think carefully about feedback of other's work.
Bernadette was informative and encouraging, skilled in her feedback delivery and pushed us towards developing our writing.
The exercises were interesting and could be applied to my own projects with thought.
Each course I've taken with AWC has delivered a nugget of information (or more) that changed my writing process for the better in unexpected ways.
I enjoy writing and write blogs as advocacy for normalising disability. I wish to bring out more creativity in my blog writing and perhaps to write for publishing in the future.
The course format and Jennifer's feedback has helped me understand writing creatively a lot more. An unexpected outcome was reading the work of others and starting to understand what makes one piece of writing stand out more than another. I do hope to engage more in class feedback in the future.
Jennifer has a wonderful qualified and articulate strengths-based style of feedback. She is very detailed and listening to her feedback of all our work has helped me understand a little more how to create a good piece of writing.
I thought Jennifer was very thorough and it was clear she was really reading our work.
I liked the structure and the info. Very thorough...and reading other people's work. I think the final exercise to comment on others' work was helpful. Up until then, I had felt a bit like an imposter. I liked the real-time deadlines. If I'm left to submit when I feel like it I don't do anything usually.
I don't really write fiction but I understand the whole storytelling structure now. Rising tension etc. Really cool. I think all writing is creative writing anyway.
I found Angela to be relatable. Creating an environment where amateurs feel comfortable to share their struggles involves plenty of encouragement and kindly-delivered criticism and she was excellent at doing this. I would highly recommend her.
I enjoyed the fact that I managed to produce a draft in such a short period of time (I had to rewrite)! I also learnt about the faults and flaws of my writing which will help me improve!
Keep coming up with these innovative courses!
