What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I have been working on a story that I have tried to get published and wanted to hone the story to hopefully have more success with publication.
I found the feedback from Suzanne valuable and feel that I know what to work on to make my stories suitable for publication. I have learned a lot in this course and know what to work on in the future.
I would recommend this course to anyone who is starting out writing children's books. It provides excellent grounding in the essentials.
I have always thought about writing a children's book but just didn't know the exact process. I have been looking at this course for over a year now and very keen to complete it. So finally found the extra time and thought why not? :)
I really enjoyed the way the course was structured. I thought it took me through the process step by step instead of lots of information all at once.
I thought the tutor was fantastic! Really responsive and appreciated all of her constructive feedback! Feedback was always delivered as a learning opportunity.
I enjoyed how it motivated me each week to keep developing my ideas.
Thank you for a great course! Extremely worthwhile if you have been toying with the idea of writing!
Angela Slatter was fantastic. She provided very thorough individual feedback, which was so helpful.
I enjoyed working with the other writers - you certainly do learn a lot about your own writing when you see things in other's writing that you do and don't enjoy. Having such a large number of people see my work at this early stage certainly gets rid of the fear of what others will think.
If you have something you've written and not sure where to go from there, this is a great way to take it to the next level.
I found the online tutor helpful, knowledgeable and interactive.
I enjoyed the extent to which the course offered insight into all areas of freelance writing, even areas I'd not really considered myself such as invoicing. It was a comprehensive and relevant curriculum. At no point did I feel that I was being taught unnecessary 'filler' content.
It has given me great insight into the professional world of freelance writing and valuable feedback on my own work.
I would say it's a great introduction to the world of freelance writing filled with valuable content. I would definitely recommend.
Excellent tutor and helpful feedback. Lovely to speak with other course participants and receive feedback on my writing and read theirs too.
The course has provided so much information I had no idea about with regards to writing and structuring a novel. If you want to learn to write a novel, you must complete this course. It provides incredible building blocks to get started.
The tutor was awesome. Very generous in her feedback and sharing her experiences. Created a great community.
I enjoyed the Zoom workshops and learning from the group with Pamela's advice. I now have a draft outline of my book. Will set my writing goal and just go for it.
I just loved the Writing Workout and also the two other courses that I did - Creative Writing Stage 1 and Novel writing Essentials. Just get into it - it truly helps to put you on your writing track.
Michelle obviously has a lot of knowledge in this domain and was willing to share. Very clear, very thorough.
Great refresher to take before getting too deep into writing documents in our business.
I wanted to refine my foundational skills so that my creative writing would improve, my writing practice would flow better and I would find the path for making headway on the novel I'm in the process of writing.
I wasn't quite sure if I was ready for Novel Writing Essentials so I enrolled in this course first, and I'm glad I did. The exercises were fantastic in creating a practice environment to build story elements, and I loved the way I could apply my work in progress to the exercises in some instances.
Pamela is phenomenal! She's so generous with sharing her knowledge and skill set, gives constructive yet encouraging feedback with frankness and she's a true example of what many aspiring writers are aiming for, with her prolific and varied publishing history. She's also a lot of fun, and made the course interesting and engaging.
I enjoyed the group environment - I was lucky to have an awesome group. Providing feedback to each other, listening to the questions of others and getting answers I didn't even know I needed.
Before I started this course, I lacked confidence and flow in my writing practice. I've been meandering for a year on the not-even-close-to-being-finished first draft of my WIP. I thought for sure I was not cut out to be a writer, that at some point I would have to stop pretending I have something to say. But this course reminded me that writing is a skill not a talent, and I don't need to give up. And that even though there's always more to learn, that actually there is a lot I'm good at. With the support of Pamela and the writing group, I learned loads, flexed my writing muscles and have restored faith that I'll be able to finish my first draft.
I would say it's the best practical course I've ever done, with high quality content, teaching and peers.
Just a huge thank you to Pamela, Abby and anyone else behind the scenes as I know that a lot of effort goes in to ensuring these programs run so smoothly and effectively.
It seemed like a practical first step to dip my toe into creative writing. Now that the course has completed, I can reflect on where I was at the start and how much I have learned.
Angela has been very encouraging throughout the process, and has been very generous in sharing her knowledge of writing with us.
I enjoyed the process of submitting a piece of work, letting others read it and then receiving both positive and constructive feedback. I found the process of letting others view my work quite nerve wracking, but it has helped remove the fear and I feel I can move forward more confidently in the future.
The course has given me structure around my writing over the last 5 weeks and shown me a path forward.
AWC is a great place to explore your writing and take it further. There is a lot of education and support around your writing process, and lots of inspiration to lead you to the next step.
I wanted to learn more about writing crime, and work it into my current work in progress successfully. I have been so keen to do this course, and I am glad I did because it has given me some great resources to explore in my own time to use in my own writing.
I loved it! I've found myself thinking about it as I watch Blue Heelers and read crime fiction, and knowing the ins and outs, and the stuff that doesn't always make it in - for whatever reason - such as story, time, I know what is likely to have happened in between what we see on the screen and read on the page.
I was able to use some of what I learnt in the first 4-5 modules to give more colour to my own crime story. Hopefully the additional links can help bolster this some more in edits, but for now, I have added as much of what I learnt as possible at the stage I am at with my writing.
DO IT! DO IT! Whatever course you feel you need, it is totally worth it!
The tutor is amazing! She has a great wealth of knowledge and experience. She was very organised and put fabulous effort into her feedback.
I just want to keep going and Angela has given me confidence. Also, the way the lessons are written, they tell you how you feel, what might go through your mind and what the process is like. It feels real, relatable.
I just loved learning, mostly, and making connections with an experienced writer, new writers and immersing myself in the writing world a little. I genuinely felt excitement. Thank you.
The thing I found most helpful was the constructive feedback from the tutor and the class itself. They were very helpful and the feedback was amazing to say the least.
It has helped me understand where I can improve with both vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
The course is very helpful, and the online tutors and classmates are amazing and very nice.
I found our tutor helpful, relatable, easy to understand and she was relaxed in her approach and language. Her experience was woven into every part of the course.
I enjoyed being pushed out of my comfort zone with the assignments, but in a very supported way. I never felt like I was sinking.
I now know how to write copy and I had no idea or experience prior to the course. It's not that hard once you have the tools. If you're thinking about learning how to write copy and you have no idea, then do it.
I needed a refresher about some things and to get more knowledge. Nuts and bolts of writing. Steps in putting together plot, characters and setting. I feel better equipped now and ready to go on my third novel.
I like that there is a lot you can go back to - i.e. the handouts. The audio modules are good as well, very motivating. It was good that it was once a week to have a deadline for assignments as I feel that was manageable without putting too much pressure on me at the time.
I enjoyed doing the assignments. It helped to flex the writing brain. I haven't done much writing lately, so this has helped to put me back in the mode!
I have been stuck and after doing the course I feel I can move forward now. That to me is profound.
If you want to write a novel or just learn to write a report, the AWC can help you do that in a supportive environment, which you can do at your own pace or with guidelines which are doable.
Really excellent information - I got a lot out of it. A few aha! moments. Great videos. Excellent, specific content that I could apply to my stories.
I'm more confident I know what I need to make compelling characters.
Highly recommended if you are looking for specific tips to improve your writing. There were constant aha! moments, where the course identified things I knew instinctively when I read books, but hadn't kept in mind when trying to write them.
I enjoyed the activities in the workbook which helped the modules make more sense. I learned a lot about writing, planning and story structure.
Great course to give you the basics of writing creative non-fiction.
I loved the course and the flexibility. The expansion of creativity it allowed, learning and growth each week in a supporting environment.
I'm publishing my first book, out next year!!!! So HAPPY! Based on an idea that emerged within the course.
Honestly it was all great and allowed my creative flow to flourish and remain curious.
Great content and covered a lot for 5 weeks. Lots of practical advice and feedback. It was a really enjoyable course.
Carli is a great instructor, very easy to talk to and approachable. We had a really good group; everyone was friendly and supportive. I enjoyed the idea development and feeding off not only Carli but the group.
It's given me the confidence I was lacking. I also now have a much better understanding of the industry.
I was expecting a lot from this course and it delivered even more!
Cindy was helpful and seemed to provide appropriate feedback. She answered the questions posed by students in the chat box promptly.
I enjoyed Valerie's excellent presentation style and incredibly practical and wise teaching. Has shown step by step how to write and pitch freelance articles with confidence.
Thank you! I'm so happy to have discovered the AWC. The structure of the courses and the quality of teaching is outstanding, breaking the seemingly impossible down into achievable steps with a wealth of wisdom.
The course was fabulous. There is never anything better than being in a course with like-minded people. I got a lot out of the course and have now got the structure for writing in this genre.
The real treasure in this course is Louisa - L A Larkin. As a published author she was very generous and extremely encouraging to our group who ranged from starting out to writers on the verge of publishing. I sat through each 2-hour session with a big smile the whole time just from the enjoyment of the course. I recommend the course to anyone who is interested in crime and who is also interested in understanding the structure to make your story compelling.
Louisa is professional, funny, clever and made talking about killing, blowing up, and shooting people more fun than I could have imagined. Most of all she was very encouraging, generous and a skilful teacher.
I would say - if you have any desire to write novels in the crime/thriller genre this is the course for you. If you lack confidence in your writing - this is the course for you.
This has been a wonderful experience. More than I expected.
