What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I have wanted to look into being a real writer for some time. Have dabbled a bit over the years but lack the confidence. With this crazy world with covid, I decided that the time is now.
The course helped me think about where I want to go in writing. It has awakened the desire to work on my writing journey. Even at my age (57) I am looking forward to the next chapter in life.
The feedback was great. The tutor really went into detail of our writing and gave very personal feedback which was at the level we were at. She was non-judgmental and very encouraging as well.
I was able to learn the structure of my thoughts as well as my writing. Feedback on what I'm doing without realising which helped me get unstuck! Also the sense of community to help me feel less alone in my experience.
I have already recommended the AWC to my friends who are avid readers and to kids who like writing. I am looking to enrol my kids.
It is rare to be able to have tuition and feedback from people who are currently in the industry and have many years of experience. You can't get this from a book. That, in my opinion, is the core strength of this excellent course.
Each module is clearly organized and well-presented. This is supported by feedback that addresses the assignment within the contexts of what the module contains.
The course is enjoyable, user-friendly, stacked with information you need, and presented by knowledgeable and helpful people who, at the end of the course, you can count as friends.
This course does what all courses at AWC do - opens another portal into the world of writing. It's a fascinating place to visit and hopefully, one day, a great place to live.
It has illuminated so much about how to structure my novel and given me the confidence to go forward. I think the course was pretty perfect for what I was after.
You can clearly see how all the modules follow on from each other and work together to give a clear understanding of the structure of a novel as a whole.
The tutor was an excellent clear communicator with very practical feedback to participants.
Really well laid out balance of course notes, audio and assignment feedback as well as analysis of published articles which made it very real-world and practical. It was also great to see fellow students' ideas and hear feedback on them.
It gave me a quick and digestible insight into what's possible and how to approach freelance writing, how and where to pitch etc, that I feel I could use right away.
I really love writing stories for this age group and thought it would be a great course to undertake. I thought it might be time consuming however I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It was upbeat and positive. I really enjoyed Lesley's enthusiasm for writing.
It really clarified how to go about writing for this age group. It was quite thorough in that way so I feel confident to go ahead and write stories for submission to publishing houses.
I love the way you can fit these courses in with your daily life. I love the online learning experience.
I found for the stage I'm at in the writing process, this course is what I needed. For me it was more about listening and taking notes. I have been writing for quite a few years. My books sit in a drawer never to be seen by anyone. I feel at this point in my life that maybe someone should see them.
I enjoyed listening to all the interviews and hearing how everyday people took the steps to do something they love. To hear the stories of people like myself who don't come from a writing background but love it with a passion, to know that it is possible to take something you love and turn it into a career.
I realised that the only way I can reinvent myself is to take the first step like those people I listened to.
The course was informative, well presented and spoken in simple plain language. I enjoyed it.
Loved it. Loved the detail. Bernadette's video tutorials were brilliant.
I enjoy copywriting because I enjoy the challenge of coming up with great words that sell. I now want to pursue freelance writing work in the area where I live.
It was an excellent course and covered everything it said would be covered. The feedback was detailed and useful as was the opportunity to hear feedback on all assignments, thereby gaining even more insight.
Fantastic tutor. Alex was so thorough and knowledgeable. She was a very earnest teacher. I learnt a lot from Alex and she answered several questions I had.
Great course. Highly recommended.
I found my online tutor very knowledgeable and helpful, giving feedback that I could work on and meaningful praise.
I liked writing the assignments as I got to unleash my creativity and produce work that I was proud of. I've found that I can actually write well and enjoy doing it.
If you want to learn more about writing or improve your skills, give it a go.
Suzanne was great, providing very positive feedback in a way that was accessible yet thought-provoking. I have developed some greater confidence in sharing my work since receiving her feedback, so thank you Suzanne!
I enjoyed the assignments, particularly the "ordering food" assignment. I had never created a scene that wasn't written for the express purpose of furthering the story, however after completing the assignment, it surprised me to realise that the scene I wrote taught me so much about my character, her motivation and development. I am considering including it in my manuscript for that reason! Receiving feedback from my tutor and peers was also very illuminating and was another step in building confidence to share my work more readily.
Thank you to my peers and tutor for their support during this step in my writing journey!
The AWC courses are always great, and this one was no exception. Short lectures and useful materials made it very quick and easy to do.
I feel confident that I will be able to offer my services as a content writer in addition to my copywriting services
I was feeling overwhelmed and didn't know how to progress with my narrative non-fiction/family history. This course took me by the hand and showed me what I think will be an incredibly useful tool for tackling the tome.
YES! I yelled, making the cat jump, when Natasha showed us Scrivener's power to give you a variety of ways to look at your manuscript.
I've almost completed three courses with the Australian Writers' Centre and they've been practical, professional and above all inspirational. As a writer, even a writer during the period of Covid, you don't have to be alone!
Thank you so much for offering this course in this way. The flexibility afforded, with the accountability offered, was exactly what I needed to make a start on this new career pathway. I hope to come back and do a further course later this year.
Loved the course content, loved the format delivered in. The tutor was extremely knowledgeable, clear, precise, positive, and confident in what they were presenting. Very constructive feedback on assignments submitted.
It showed me that I CAN actually go out and give this a go, even after just 5 weeks.
I wanted to broaden my writing skillset and have always been interested in copywriting - and previous AWC courses I've completed have been both enjoyable and informative.
The content was great and each week built upon the next well. I love that you can keep the resources. I also had a great, interactive class on the chat which made it more enjoyable.
Bernadette is fantastic - warm, engaging, and explains things in a really clear way. She also gives useful, actionable feedback that improves your skills.
I enjoyed all of it! But I really enjoyed the creative brief process and tips on where to find clients.
I will now call myself a copy writer without feeling shy about it - and get out there and hustle for some work!
I've had my own copywriting business for just over 2 years and wanted to get a better understanding of the SEO elements.
Bernadette is a fantastic tutor and provides amazing feedback. I now have a much better understanding of SEO that I can now offer to my clients.
Great course, great value for money, fantastic tutor.
Pamela is clearly a very accomplished author. The course was comprehensive (while by its nature "introductory") and feedback was also thoughtful and helpful.
I'm one of those I-know-best kind of people. I wasn't expecting to learn much. But I found the structure of the course was logical, each module was of the right duration, and the online format allowed me to take heaps of notes, which I'm now revising.
Don't hesitate, just do it! I've recommended it to my wife, who's Head of English at a Sydney high school. She's been very impressed when she's overheard some of my lessons.
Just thanks, I really enjoyed it - more than I thought I would.
The course was well-structured, provided examples, and spoke to the notes. It brought the art and composition of scenes to life and pointed out to me the built nature. The idea of making sure the scene is from the point of view character was illuminating.
I knew it would be good, but I'm amazed by how much was packed into this course.
I loved the handouts that provided the structure I was chasing to develop my characters and their world. The prompts and questions cover so many areas, and I could easily see where my research needed polishing.
My understanding of how, what and why to research has become much clearer. I was flailing around, but now have a structure and feel a lot more confident with both researching and writing.
Do it. Don't even bother to think about, just book yourself in and enjoy the ride.
