What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
The breadth of the course was delightfully unexpected.
It was perfectly delivered. I really enjoyed casting the net back into the depths of history of how we tell stories, as well as the scientific exploration of how stories affect us and change us.
It's helped me regain focus on my writing, as well as feel better about not having a "perfect" writing schedule or being able to write the "perfect" chapters.
Writing down my fears is as important as writing down my dreams. I can't begin to chase my dreams if I haven't faced my fears, and I can't face my fears until I name them first.
Do it! Best investment in yourself and your writing you could do.
I found I needed help in planning my novel, so I thought this course may help me get some groundwork done, which it has.
I was very impressed with this course. I feel that I am now on track to coming up with the basics for a novel that will actually work. I enjoyed the artwork in the slides and the positivity of the presenter. I feel I can actually achieve my writing goals.
I always thought that plotting would inhibit my creativity, but now I see that the only thing that truly inhibits me is my own self-doubt and the dreaded inner critic.
Go for it as it will change your life.
I enjoyed having a set structure to follow through the editing process and through the course. Gave me structure and targets to meet when editing. It gave me motivation to get the job done.
I wanted to write more clearly on topics that I get excited about. This course was short, well-priced and right on target.
I found Vivienne's clear, logical and well-paced style of presenting - and her carefully prepared handouts - very easy to follow. She made the whole experience very enjoyable with her calmness and totally positive feedback.
I hadn't expected such comprehensive feedback for such a short course. And it was great to be able to learn not only from my own work but to see what others were doing and learn from their feedback too - a very helpful bonus.
My major take-away was that there is actually a serious genre of opinion writing. I thought it was more fringe to want to put out a well-crafted opinion. I'm excited that there's more opportunity than expected and that there's a bit of money in too.
It's great. The content is excellent. Being involved with a small cohort of fellow aspiring writers is very helpful. The instructors are professional and plug into the industry. You can work at your own pace and actually get feedback. In addition, it's really well priced.
I am doing the final edits of my manuscript, but after multiple drafts I wished I had this earlier!
It seemed to address the exact things I was struggling with and made issues that I thought were complex, like tense, very easy to digest. It has made me confident to move through a final copy edit knowing exactly what I am looking for.
These highly focussed courses are perfect because each person struggles with something different and it allows you to get amongst the weeds of what it is you need to understand more.
The course was easy to understand and the relevant links will come in handy. There are practical steps to advance through and it is relevant to the Australian market. It feels more doable.
I appreciated Pamela's breadth of knowledge across genres and her book references. I also appreciated being able to slow down or speed up the videos.
It was encouraging to hear from Pamela that there are a variety of ways to approach character development. Being a 'pantser' I have often felt daunted by the way some people have copious notes for their characters. My main character is usually quite clear but I would need to be more thoughtful about other characters.
The AWC is a great way to invest in your writing passion. Courses are created to be accessible, practical and affordable. A wonderful way to grow your skills and keep your head in the game.
I was drawn to the course by the premise of it being about developing a joyous relationship to writing, and going deeper than just learning techniques. It felt like it would be almost therapeutic!
I enjoyed the way Kate brought so many down-to-earth elements into the course, things that I feel wouldn't be found in other courses. And also complex things like an overview of what's actually going on in the brain in various modes. It all just wove together just a comprehensive and somehow spiritual take on writing.
I've been wanting to bring some stories of mine to life, and this course has given me so many ideas and tools for moving forward with that! I can experience a joyous anticipation about writing when I develop that kind of relationship to it, instead of treating it like a chore or something I need to put lots of pressure on myself for.
Example texts and downloadable worksheets were great for reflection. I also loved the ability to pause and speed up the videos and work through at my own pace.
Very well organised course which was easy to follow and gave clear guidance. Wonderful course, thank you. Now I'm off to write!
I really enjoy how well Bernadette explains each topic with fantastic real world and personal examples.
I loved completing the weekly assignments. They are enjoyable and challenging. While assignments can be daunting they do help you to understand each topic. Bernadette's feedback and insights are extremely helpful and reassuring. Her feedback together with her incredible knowledge helped me to understand when I was on the right track, as well as how I needed to improve.
I feel I have added another string to my bow, which is exactly what I had hoped for.
Just do it! You will learn so much and your confidence will soar to new heights.
I was looking for something to help me get started, and I was completely overwhelmed with the idea of starting a manuscript in MS word! I wanted to be sure that I was ready to commit to using Scrivener.
Fabulous course, and I love that Natasha shared her own working manuscripts so that I could see how useful Scrivener really is. This has inspired me to finally get started on my manuscript(s)! I have been procrastinating about getting started, for fear of not getting the structure right. I love how easy it is to move scenes around in Scrivener!
I've done several AWC courses, but for some reason this one has made me feel the most inspired to pull my finger out and get started. All of their courses are brilliant. Money very well spent!
Vivienne was terrific! She was engaging, spoke very clearly, used excellent examples, and has a knack for breaking down complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
I enjoyed walking through actual opinion pieces so we can see how good ones are executed in real life + individualised feedback on our own writing + invaluable insights into how and where to get published
It's made me feel more confident about putting my opinions out there in the world - in a way that is engaging for readers. It's helped me learn avenues for getting opinion pieces published.
I enjoyed Kate's passion and enthusiasm for writing and sharing her knowledge and wisdom to help others share her joy in writing and creating.
The course has provided me with the motivation and guideposts to help achieve my goal of completing a novel and better understanding the structure of a novel.
Thoroughly enjoyed getting my brain back into gear and actually thinking of "how" to write rather than just having thoughts in my head. Highly recommend it.
Very professional tutor. Calm voice when delivering the modules. Feedback was always positive but not to the point of being unhelpful. The help and constructive ideas were delivered in a friendly manner so you did not ever feel like you had failed! Would be happy with Vivienne as a tutor on another course.
Has given me the motive to actually try and write some more of my thoughts out and into opinions with the flower structure and other ideas presented.
Nat provided excellent feedback and was very helpful. The audio coursework had some great tips and I learnt a lot. I also really enjoyed getting some proper feedback on my writing.
I found I needed to do a lot more work on developing my characters, which really helped with my writing. I have also made a whole heap of changes to how I was writing descriptions, dialogue etc based on the coursework modules. I needed to think more about smell and sound and touch. My writing was very focused on what you could see.
I found this course really helpful for the work I was doing on my novel. I plan to do more courses with the Australian Writers' Centre so I can keep improving!
I had been wanting to do a course like this for a long time so when I found this particular course, I knew it would work for me. I am so glad I enrolled.
I have seen an improvement in my writing after following Nat's feedback which was always constructive.
I hadn't been writing regularly and this course made me write every week which I am hoping to keep doing. I also enjoyed reading the work of others, giving feedback and also receiving feedback from others on my own writing.
It has reminded me how much I enjoy the creative process of constructing a story. The characters that live in my head may find a home now.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the course. I would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to take the next step in their writing, whether they're just starting out or have a half-written novel.
The flexibility in completing the modules online at my own pace and short duration was what I was looking for, as I juggle work and a baby.
I honestly loved the content and depth of the course. Margaret was amazing at verbal feedback. I'm definitely motivated to keep writing and at least self-learning.
It's exactly the push you need to get started if you're a newbie to children's picture book writing.
Loved the tutor. Gave really good constructive feedback. Had her own personal opinions on the pieces so didn't sound rehearsed or robotic. Her passion showed in every video.
I enjoyed the assessments. Breaking down the writing to its basics and slowly building it up to a full scene.
I got a lot out of the week 3 assignment, the visualisation in which we imagined ourselves thoroughly in the scene before writing. I will be using that constantly going forward.
I've already recommended this course to others. I've said it is a great way to re-ignite writing passion, and that it's motivated me to properly get cracking on my writing.
Thanks to Nat, she was great :)
Really enjoyed all the modules, the assignment relevance, the mode of feedback and the feedback. All was excellent. The tutor was positive and knowledgeable.
I enjoyed getting to know all the elements of book writing. A lot more complex than expected.
I have been blogging for years and have been attempting to write a non-fiction book on criticism for creatives. I wanted to improve my professionalism without losing my 'voice'.
Vivienne is very knowledgeable and professional. I really enjoyed challenging myself and the feedback was really helpful.
I have already recommended this course and others to friends. The courses are full great content but also easy to complete in the allotted time. Perfect for busy people wanting to improve their skills.
