What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I am writing more newsletters, business correspondence and creating scientific/educational resources and wanted to improve my plain English skills.
The course was well presented with good examples for each rule and tip. It was easy to understand and the examples gave the rules context. I also liked the opportunity to have my work reviewed.
I have a good reference or key grammar rules now as well as the 11 golden rules. Makes thinking about writing in a professional manner more accessible.
I enrolled in this course because I have been writing consistently without structure and the writing is a dog's breakfast!
Kate Forsyth is very engaging and knowledgeable. She was experienced, patient, and completely immersed in the world of creative writing.
The course was a delight. The salient points were condensed in a practical way without being boring. It has assisted me to pinpoint exactly why my writing is a dog's breakfast and given me the tools to start fixing the problems.
If you are time poor and need to boost your creative writing it is exceptionally good value for time and money.
Thank you for making this course accessible to me by doing it online.
Pam is ace. She is so calm and kind and she took my intro comments and gave me pointed feedback that was useful and easy to digest.
I enjoyed the deadlines to submit work. It helped me overcome my procrastination or letting life get in the way.
It helped me establish a new creative writing routine post-uni. Indeed, I considered Write Your Novel as a remedial course! Due to university commitments, I hadn’t been able to work creatively and focus on my novels for three years.
I established a good writing technique or routine by pushing myself to write toward a deadline. After working from home for three years, I understood I couldn't be creatively productive there.
I took the train to the library on the weekend, aiming to get there by the 10am opening time. I could sometimes use my phone to write on the train if I felt up to it. At the library, I could put in 1.5 hours of writing. For a lunch break, I would walk to a cafe, and while waiting for food, I could sometimes put down some more words. Afterwards, if I felt up to it, I would return to a library to write or do a creative nourishment activity (such as a movie). Had I seen a movie, the train ride home was another space and time to get some more writing done.
This seems indulgent, expensive and fattening! But making time for myself to work on my novels and do creative things was wonderful for my writing progress *and* mental health. This course helped me to develop and understand my writing needs.
As well as being extremely experienced and articulate, Kate was a great teacher as she took the time to check in with us, answer any questions and has a very approachable manner. Her delivery was very clear.
I enjoyed learning the process of plotting a novel and planning techniques. I also enjoyed the technical info about the structure of a novel, types of plots and characters.
I'm going to review my current manuscript and check it against the five points in a plot, and make sure they are in the right place for each POV character. I'm also keen to rework my one-page synopsis based on the structure Kate showed us. Also when I start my second manuscript later this year I'll refer to her planning structure.
Great courses and community. You'll find something that suits your needs and your learning preference.
Kate was wonderful. She was so knowledgeable and gave such great advice. She made me think of things in structure that I had never given thought to before.
I enjoyed how well put together the course was, and how Kate married artwork with her teachings.
Part way through the first night of the course wheels started turning in my head and I realised where I want the narrative to go in the second book of my trilogy. This is something I had been struggling with.
I liked the idea of laying a foundation stone upon which to build my writing dreams. I have always wanted to write but needed help to start.
Angela was terrific. I imagine it is hard in such a short space of time and only really touching the tip of the iceberg in regard to the craft of writing to provide guidance and direction. Angela nailed it! I found the feedback encouraging, helpful and well delivered. It would be easy to crush the dreams of a new and inexperienced writer - the course and Angela were dream facilitators not crushers.
It is easy to dream about being a writer but hard to start to be one. This course helps to start. The content was excellent and the pace of the course was very achievable. It ignited the flame now I need to keep it burning.
The Australian Writers' Centre offers something for every writer at every stage of their writing so if you need help it is a good place to look for that help.
The information was specific, clearly written and spoken, and has helped a great deal with my real estate writing confidence.
I now get paid for writing real estate copy.
The AWC offers writing courses which ensure you finish as a trained writer when you have finished. And people in the business respect graduates of these courses. Even if you do no other training, the AWC can offer you all that you need to succeed as a writer in any field.
Bernadette was excellent. I didn't realise until I was doing the course that she was the author of a book I had read, 'How to Build an Online Business'. So I was delighted! Great to have her personally give feedback on our work.
The personal feedback on our assignments was the most enjoyable part.
I now think about active sentences when I write. Also, how to grab attention from the outset. Lots of tips and tricks I will continue to use.
Thank you very much! Really enjoyed it. Great course, highly recommended.
I have had an idea for a book in my head for many years and now was the time to get it out of my head and onto paper.
I enjoyed reading other students' work and the constructive feedback from Angela. I liked the audios as Valerie read them in such a personable manner; they were easy to listen to and better than reading a handout. Mind you, the handouts were great too!
I found Angela to be fair with her feedback. She gave good advice and never put down anyone's ideas or writing skills. If anything, she was encouraging.
I enjoyed actually writing. It was good to get the ideas out and the assignments gave you artistic license to do that. I was able to explore a different POV which allowed me to express the character in a way I would not have done before. I may even use that technique when I write my book. And I thank AWC for that.
I love you! I think AWC has comprehensive courses and help guide writers to be better than they thought they could be.
I look forward to doing another course in the future. I hope to explore more later in the year once I get cracking on my first draft.
Overall impression of Pamela Cook: she was amazing. Her feedback has been invaluable; she is so knowledgeable and organised. I felt so comfortable with her as she guided us through the course and I could not think of a better mentor to have.
I loved the interaction with my peers, the modules were easy to follow and the time frame between submissions, and also to be able to gain the knowledge of how to give feedback as well as receive it.
It has given me the tools to follow my dreams and aspirations of one day becoming a published author.
I can actually do this! I felt this halfway through the course after a couple of submissions. I let down my guard and allowed the feedback from my peers to help me dig deeper into my novel and think about the storyline in a different way. To take a step back and look at my novel through different eyes!
I just want to say thank you! Thank you for having a course like this available and being able to step outside my comfort zone and chase my dreams!
The moment about the story questions and how they need to be worked into every scene was an important moment for me. It has changed the way I look at and consider my scenes and what I'm putting in them.
This course will really help you nail how to write a story.
Angela provided excellent feedback throughout the course. It was comforting to have a tutor who was still well active in the industry.
I enjoyed the exercises and flexibility of schedule.
Much of what was taught has reassured me that I was already moving in the right direction. It further directed me onto the right path.
It's a great course that helps ignite a passion for creative writing within many mediums.
The module delivery was very well done and easy to listen to and follow. The online tutor was very supportive and encouraging and it gave me more confidence to write.
I enjoyed all aspects of the course.
I now believe that writing is a skill that can be developed rather than a talent that someone might possess. All writers have some self-doubt in their ability to be able to write something that others might want to read; it's not just me!
Thanks for the great course. Money well spent.
I wanted a starting point having not done any creative writing since high school.
I really enjoyed the progression of the modules. I enjoyed the writing tasks and the discipline imposed by the deadlines.
The modules were very logical in order. I liked how much enjoyment I derived from the activities. I also got braver in showing my writing to my wife and daughters.
Feedback was very positive which I think is necessary for an introductory course.
Very good starting point. I am keen to do another course next year.
Bernadette was great! She is very well spoken and clearly has a gift for teaching. The way everything was explained made some of the more complicated subject matter understandable. Her feedback was excellent as well, and I learnt even more from it.
I honestly enjoyed the new module opening up every Monday morning and diving right in. I love that you've managed to cram a lot of information into the course without it being overwhelming and have also kept it very achievable to complete.
Copywriting is so much more involved and diverse than what I originally thought.
I now feel confident enough in my writing abilities to begin pursuing a job. I'm not entirely sure which avenue I'd like to go down yet, but I'm already looking at the next course that interests me with AWC so I can proactively figure that out.
The course was very well structured, informative and I got so much value out of it. I had great feedback from Bernadette and I'm keen to get started on another course because I enjoyed this one so much.
Don't think about it, just do it.
I just completed Write your Novel and am on a roll to move to the next stage to get my novel published. All the courses I've done with AWC have been fantastic; chock full of great information.
I enjoyed the in-depth information about different publishers and their approach to publishing different genres.
I'm just so excited to be on this writing journey and the AWC has given me the confidence to continue through to actually approach publishers and put my work out there to the whole world.
The AWC is fantastic and I thoroughly recommend any course with them.
As an intro to content writing, it was concise yet comprehensive. The templates are very useful as a framework for your content pieces and to spark your thought process.
The practical application to published work gave me a good understanding of the varied approaches to content writing. It has given me confidence to shape my ideas into a piece of writing.
If you'd like to be a writer, the Australian Writers' Centre can give you the confidence and support you need to realise your dream.
Pamela Cook was a fantastic tutor. She was insightful, helpful and encouraging. She has helped so much and I cannot thank her enough.
The feedback from an experienced writer just helped me to understand how to make my work more engaging. I have the confidence to continue with my writing journey.
After completing your Copywriting Essentials course, I saw this and knew I just had to do it. It just felt like the next natural step in my learning.
I enjoyed that it was self-paced which allowed me full control over how slow or fast I wanted to go. Dean was a fantastic teacher too, he kept it interesting, fun and of course full of valuable information.
I feel the confidence to go down the Real Estate Copywriting path and own it!
AWC courses are fantastic! The modules within the course are well thought out and, after completing two courses now, I find the teaching style to be informative and easy to follow.
I'd heard lots of good things about Scrivener from other writers, and they all recommended this course to get me started.
I like the way all the steps were repeated multiple times. Really helped everything sink in.
The one major learning was probably the session on creating your research folder in the program, and the fact that you can take images and webpages and save them all in one place. The fact that this process was so easy and will make a big difference to my research when writing was a major factor for me deciding to purchase the program.
