What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I was attracted to this course knowing that the very first sentence must hook the reader and propel them into the storyline. Pamela Freeman always runs a great Zoom session.
The section on info dumping was excellent. Additionally, the question, "What secrets do we keep and why?"
Pamela always presents clearly and in a logical way as well as provoking thinking. The lovely Abby also helps steer the presentation along.
The AWC always does excellent Zoom seminars and the courses help get you started.
There was an enormous amount of practical content shared, particularly in the bonus module on research. The section on defamation answered all of my questions (even if it has scared me a little!)
Excellent courses that not only provide practical tools, information and learnings but also build motivation.
I have completed a novel on climate change and wanted to make sure that the first chapter would be to the expectations of a publisher and would also convince the general public of the seriousness of the situation.
After this seminar, I have already decided to make changes to the manuscript in order to grab the attention of the publishers/readers in the first paragraphs.
I now understand that the novel has to engage the reader in the first paragraphs and that it is easy to fall in the information dumping trap.
AWC courses are well designed. If one wants to become a serious writer, there are rules to follow. This is an excellent place to learn them. Excellent tutors and good value for money.
The session completely changed what I thought I knew about starting a story. I feel much better equipped to do them properly now.
Pamela's style of presentation is very engaging and interesting.
All AWC's courses are excellent - well-presented and very informative.
It was so useful seeing how Natasha uses Scrivener in her own writing, to see practical examples of how it works. It was good to be able to see real examples of how it worked in writing an entire manuscript.
There were a few things I'd been wanting to do, but didn't realise how easy it was.
Scrivener is worth the learning process - and this is the easiest way to learn.
Pamela was really helpful, and gave me a little light bulb moment. I enjoyed her knowledge, also in answering the questions and answers at the end, very useful tips.
Did this meet my expectations? Yes, and more. Thank you, Pamela.
This Openings workshop was just what I needed to hear. A light bulb moment.
I was aware of everything Pamela shared - the workshop was fabulous, as it reinforced my current knowledge and helped to validate that I'm on the right track. It's great to have these important elements strongly entrenched in my craft as I draft and self-edit.
I enjoyed the presentation structure and Pamela's immense knowledge of the craft, and her impeccable teaching skills.
If you want to know how to write and develop your craft as an ongoing process, then the Australian Writers' Centre is, and will be, your support network.
I hoped to learn how to "hook" my readers from the first paragraph, and I thought Pamela would be able to share her expertise in this area.
I love seminars where I actually LEARN something...and I did!
Pamela Freeman shares her knowledge with humour and honesty.
I would recommend the Australian Writers' Centre to anyone who has an interest in improving their writing skills in a non-confronting format.
Pamela was a brilliant presenter - the information was clear, consistent and delivered with authority, experience and humour.
The presentation was excellent. The material was presented in a clear way and reinforced throughout the evening.
Pamela is an excellent presenter and pulls lots of things we might already know together so that applying the knowledge becomes easier and more obvious.
Well worth doing. You always come away with something you can apply immediately.
Pamela's style is clear, easy to follow and understand. It totally married in with Module 2, which is where I'm up to in Creative Writing 1. Further explanations of 'voice' etc helped me. I now hope I can translate it to my writing!!
An excellent resource of valuable material and people.
The enthusiasm and evident expertise of Pamela was infectious and helped to motivate me to greater efforts with my writing.
The AWC provides some excellent resources and short seminars to support beginning and aspiring writers.
It explained in plain detail exactly what a writing voice and tone consisted of - something I couldn't understand for years, and it all finally clicked.
The AWC helped me get back into writing with passion after I was on the brink of abandoning it altogether.
The seminar was densely packed with information and useable techniques.
Pamela's presentation was clear, concise and provided actionable instructions that were relevant to where I am right now in my writing project.
Pamela Freeman is a great teacher. Any course she leads will be valuable.
I like that there were different exercises that gave 'bird's eye views' of the manuscript.
It has given me new tools to approach editing (which will also affect how I plan and write in the future).
AWC courses are good and well designed for self-paced learning.
The tutor was awesome. I enjoyed the feedback.
I know now that I can write and make a living out of it. If you want to learn how to make a life out of writing, you need to go to the AWC.
The feedback from other students as well as the tutor was really great. The feedback from everyone was inspiring. The tutor was very knowledgeable and relatable. Provided great insights and information.
Really excellent courses and tutors. Worth every cent.
Completing the Copywriting Essentials course got me motivated to learn about what it takes to run your own Copywriting Business.
The modules are really easy to follow and understand. Bernadette's feedback was fantastic. She genuinely wants to help you out and help you reach your full potential.
It's made me realise I am able to do this, I just have to get the ball rolling and get on with it.
The courses are really easy to follow and complete in your spare time. The feedback is via Loom so you get to hear and/or see your tutor rather than just read their feedback. It makes it feel more personal.
I was attracted to the novel writing series of courses because, having bought quite a few how-to-write-a-book books, I wasn't completely 'getting it' and thought short interactive courses would be a good way for things to click. I chose the AWC because it seemed well established, and I liked the idea of a local school that fit my timezone (didn't matter in the end!) and I had the chance to meet other local writers-to-be.
I did this course first (CWS1) mainly because it seemed to be how the courses were set up. I was worried that it would be more of a 'rah rah' course to get you writing (with all of the good bits in the later courses) but I was very pleasantly surprised to see it really was a very practical approach to get you thinking about writing a book rather than just writing.
Victoria was great. The feedback was supportive and constructive, and done with the right tone for an introductory course. I also really appreciated the timeliness of the feedback (always on the Monday).
Strangely, I enjoyed the assignments the most (first course that's ever been true for I think!) And the video feedback was ever helpful.
These people know and care about what they're doing. You will be better for having done the course. I can now see a path to actually writing a book. Worth the money just for that.
I want to get back into the workforce but in a business of my own and in a career I will enjoy. In 2012, I completed the course for writing Children and YA novels with AWC. After searching the courses on the site, copywriting caught my attention as it seemed to answer the questions I've been looking for.
The tutor was very positive. The feedback was fantastic.
I enjoyed learning that I am capable of writing copy.
AWC courses are really easy to follow and easy to complete in spare time. The feedback is great; being able to hear and see the tutor talk about your work.
