What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
Victoria Purman was a fantastic tutor; her feedback was constructive and always very positive and inspiring. Highly recommend her as a tutor.
Completing this course has given me more insight into character creation, point of view and structure.
I would definitely recommend AWC to friends and colleagues. This course was full of helpful information, and the exercises/assignments are challenging but very achievable. Oh, and did I say that Victoria is a great tutor?
The main reason I was attracted to this course was to have Victoria as the mentor. I love her books and I feel her approach to stories is similar to how I would like mine to be.
Fabulous course. It made me feel confident going forward and was encouraging and instructive. I have been able to look at story writing from a range of different viewpoints. It has been brilliant.
I have wanted to write a particular story for many years. Now I am ready to start.
Fantastic course. So much to learn and absorb, with great lessons and exercises, and the online tuition was invaluable at helping me practice the theory.
The tutor was very encouraging, knowledgeable, and diligent in providing the feedback.
I enjoyed writing the assignments, reading the other participants' submissions and listening to the feedback.
Huge impact on my writing in so many ways. From the encouragement that comes from hearing about the process and the slog (seriously!) of producing a novel through to the practical, nitty gritty tips and tricks. I also look at people in new ways, wondering what makes them like they are, what their facets and layers are...
Go for it! The instructors and lecturers are wonderful and you'll learn a lot.
I have had a lot of non-fiction writing experience, but I've never managed to write engaging fiction, so I wanted to learn how to!
Victoria was very helpful, thorough and constructive. I found her advice to me and other students very helpful!
I really enjoyed doing the assignments. I like putting theory into practice!
I developed an idea for a novel, and have started researching and writing it!
Learning about points of view has helped enormously in knowing how to put a piece of fiction (long or short) together.
I have done several courses with AWC, relating to both fiction and non-fiction writing. The courses are always excellent and enjoyable!
The tutor was knowledgeable, experienced, friendly and supportive.
I loved learning about how to cultivate confidence as a new copywriter and the mindset of being a successful businesswoman. So many aspects of this course I can apply to my life in general.
Not only have I learnt about the mechanics of setting up a thriving freelance copywriting business, but I now have a deeper understanding of my core values, strengths and weaknesses. This knowledge is crucial for building confidence and achieving success as a new freelance copywriter - and also in my life as a mother, wife and teacher.
A wonderful course, thank you Bernadette for your knowledge, wisdom and support. I have learnt so much about not only the world of business and copywriting but also about how to be confident and to follow your dreams.
Enrol now and get started, it will change your life.
The seminar covered how I write instinctively. The key learning from the seminar, though, was the verbalisation of those instincts.
I enjoyed the presenter's manner and personality. I liked the theory at the beginning and questions at the end.
Lots of very useful information.
As someone who has used Scrivener a bit in the past, I was concerned that I wouldn't learn anything new, but I did.
The examples were real and practical. I'm sure I will find it easier and more productive to use Scrivener now to finish my manuscript.
I've done quite a few AWC courses and they have all been fantastic. If you're on the fence about getting started, do it! You won't regret it.
Clearly presented, good narration and structure. Enjoyed the charts to analyse scenes, plot, sub-plots and themes, story questions, risks.
I certainly understand more and can see more about structure in books read and why stories can be more satisfying to the reader. Good tools I am planning to use for editing.
I could see in some of my short pieces - they had strong / various themes when I analysed them. I used different stories for different exercises, which was also valuable.
Someone recently told me they were writing a novel and were a bit stuck on how to achieve something with their main character. I said they were very brave attempting a novel without the advantage of writing tools of trade. I encouraged them to check out the AWC courses!
I liked Victoria's down to earth attitude, and her feedback was generous and fair, with just the right amount of constructive advice without being too intimidating.
I got real pleasure in being brave enough to let other people read my writing. It's quite confronting knowing a complete stranger will be reading and judging your writing. Also reading other people's stories and comments about each other's writing.
I think, just maybe, I might be thinking of myself as a writer in the making...
If you want to see what it takes to be a writer, or if you want to get motivation to write, do a course like Creative Writing Stage 1 - you won't be disappointed.
A big thanks to Victoria.
Bernadette was so knowledgeable! She has a wealth of information to give and offered the perfect combination of giving a little bit more than she needed to without going off track. I really enjoyed getting some feedback from her and it made me feel like my writing was worthwhile.
I enjoyed the way Bernadette explained things and learning something new.
Hopefully I will be getting a new career out of it!
I didn't understand what copywriting was before this course. Now I feel confident to begin putting myself out there and offering my services.
It's a trusted company, with real people and good course outlines.
Thank you very much for all the great teaching :)
I have always been interested in travel writing but was never sure how to start. It would have taken me months or probably even years to find out all of this information on my own. Without this course, I wouldn't have known how to pitch my story to an editor, what a 'famil' or 'on spec' was, or how to structure my article. I now feel confident to start my freelance travel writing career.
I really enjoyed getting feedback on my work as it gave me confidence to continue learning and improving my work. I also enjoyed learning about the business side of travel writing, such as how to email an editor and rates of pay.
One major learning point was understanding the different types of travel articles and how they are written. After learning this, it was really interesting to look at newspaper articles and analyse their structure.
I would definitely recommend the Australian Writers' Centre to anyone thinking about pursuing a career in writing.
I'm writing a book and am in a stage where I think it could go somewhere but I know I need to tighten it up and have a lot to learn, so this seminar was appealing for that reason. It came along at the perfect time.
So many great insights from an experienced author, and good, practical advice that I have taken on board already. I also loved hearing everyone's questions, and could relate to a lot of them.
AWC has great resources and insights, and courses/seminars that are really useful and practical for a writer. I'm looking forward to engaging and learning more.
Presenter was very good. I liked the way Pamela got to the point and was very polite, but didn't sugar coat answers. I definitely left with something to review in my already-published books and some things for the book I'm currently writing.
It's a course delivered by experienced writers and attended by people really writing or hoping to write books. There is plenty of time for, and lots of questions at all levels of understanding and experience.
Being a writer interests me and I wasn't sure where to start. This seemed like a great place to explore different styles of writing and see what I was drawn to.
I liked that I could do it at my own pace & listen and/or read the modules. I also liked that it was divided into modules and not one long course.
I feel more confident to give writing a go.
Well thought out, practical classes that are good value for money.
I really like the time spent on going through different examples and showing different ways to achieve the desired outcome using the templates provided.
It has given me the confidence to write about the things I know about and to not be scared to put my thoughts out there.
It makes the writing process accessible and takes the fear out of it.
I had no idea editing could be so fulfilling and enjoyable! The step-by-step structure of the course really appealed to me, and of course, having completed each step with my first-ever manuscript to show for it speaks for itself.
I bought this course as a "carrot" to push me to finish a manuscript. As in, I had half a dozen unfinished manuscripts sitting in my digital desk drawer that I kept neglecting because a) I didn't think they were particularly good and b) I was scared of the editing process. Buying the course was meant to make me accountable to achieve something.
I LOVE step-by-step, guided processes. Knowing you could literally tick a box once you'd completed a step was very gratifying. I also loved the feeling of empowerment, that I really could edit my own story, do it justice, and come out with a polished manuscript ready for beta readers!
As I was working through editing my existing manuscript, I could see how the course content provides not only a beautiful framework for work I have already completed but how easily applicable the knowledge will be to the words and stories that are yet to come. For example, for an idea I have been nurturing for a while, I am already starting to think about where my inciting event needs to occur, how I need to show the motivations of the main characters, and establish a compelling and unique voice from the get-go, among a myriad of other considerations.
Go for it! I have completed three courses now and the knowledge I have gained has been invaluable.
I wanted to learn what agents and readers are looking for in the opening of a novel so I can improve my novel's opening. I wanted a course that was affordable and provided me with actionable steps too. Plus, I'm a big fan of Pamela Freeman and enjoy the way she teaches. Her honesty and kindness are super helpful.
Pamela is a brilliant presenter and she is so knowledgeable. I enjoyed learning about her 'bits' folder and how to use it to take out the info-dumps so I can save them to weave into the narrative at a different point in the story. I enjoyed learning about how to find the actual beginning of your story by looking for the first real scene. It helped to learn what a scene actually is, as well.
Doing a writing course through AWC will teach you the skills you need to write a novel that works. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that shows in their teaching, and they focus on steering writers honestly and with care toward manifesting their stories in the world. If you're thinking of taking a writing course, then check out AWC. You won't regret it.
The handout and exercises were helpful and something to refer back to.
I enjoyed the challenge it presented to me personally to think and redraft my story. It has enabled me to look at my own stories and assess where they need enhancing.
The AWC is a wonderful platform to kick start a career; informative and encouraging.
I am about to redraft my middle grade novel and know my opening has to be stronger.
This seminar showed me again what a professional outfit AWC is. I always get value for money.
I enjoyed Pamela's manner, which is so sharing with lack of pretension. She also has no fear in sharing her own pitfalls etc. The content is always fantastic, clear and doable.
I particularly liked the lack of video and audio from our side. I can front up after a busy day without having to think about what I look like.
If you are serious about your writing, the AWC gives professional advice in a very interesting and accessible manner. You will immediately see an improvement in your writing.
