What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I have a 7-year-old who loves to read. To encourage his love of reading even more, I will either read with him or read the same books as him. It's given me an interest in writing for his age group.
The video lessons were great. My past courses have been audio lessons, so video was new for me and I think it enhanced the content. It's always good to put a face to the voice!
I'm more keen than ever to write for this age group.
The self-paced courses are great. I don't have time at the moment to commit to regular live learning sessions, but I can fit in self-paced learning.
I wanted to write a novel, so I was keen to recap on the essentials of English grammar and punctuation.
I love Valerie's presentation. She is clear and precise, and has a sense of humour. It clarified a few points that I was unsure about. The use of dialogue punctuation; whether to use one or two speech marks.
AWC offers an extensive and varied range of informative courses to help improve any potential writers' ability.
I enjoy writing short stories and wanted to learn more about how to do so. I've completed a number of other AWC courses before and found them all excellently written and well presented. Didn't have to think twice about this one.
Great examples. Opportunity to develop your own story throughout as a way to reinforce learning and practice. Loved the chance to submit for feedback at the end. I particularly enjoyed the modules on style, story technique, editing, and polishing.
Helped me understand short form writing and refine my writing craft. I enter many short story writing competitions. This has given me additional encouragement and fired my enthusiasm even more. Who knows what lies ahead?
Short Story Essentials is a treasure trove of information about short-form writing presented in a well-paced and entertaining manner. It's more than nuts and bolts. It captures the essence, excitement, and joy of short story writing. By the end, you'll be up to the challenge of penning short tales. You'll be hooked.
Thanks for the ride. Brilliant.
I have done the course on Creative Writing Stage 1 and realised I knew nothing about dialogue. I have written a first draft of a manuscript and was so scared of dialogue I avoided it entirely.
Although I still have a long way to go, I feel more confident in giving it a try now. I have begun a second draft and have included dialogue on the first page! I am seeing my scenes in a whole new way. The characters are coming to life on the page.
Sign up for a course, you won't regret it.
I needed an update on how to self-publish as I have self-published 2 books on Amazon but have not reviewed them for years! I wanted to get back into my writing and start self-publishing again, so this course attracted me. I especially got the information I was needing on how to access my books again and to make changes - so I'm super happy and re-invigorated to continue my writing journey.
Linda has a very good voice and is easy to listen to which makes the course enjoyable. There was very good content and relevant to what I needed.
There is a wealth of knowledge available at the AWC from professionals who present in a very easy way to learn. There is plenty of content and no need to take notes because you can download everything to keep and that way just be present in your learning and listening.
This course was very informative, and I appreciate how Linda explained each step of the process.
I really enjoy the variety of courses at the Australian Writers' Centre and I am sure, as a writer, anyone could benefit from this variety.
I had an idea for a chapter book and wanted to develop it further. Although I read them a lot to my kids, I didn't really understand the 'official' distinctions between picture books, chapter books, middle grade books etc.
Great presentation, very clear and easy to follow. The tips about what booksellers are looking for are very helpful, as are the tutor's comments about how a book deal might look, as well as the fact that a two-book deal is not the be all and end all and can have an impact on creativity.
As a course by someone in the industry talking about writing as a career it has everything you need to know. I like that it is very practical and tells you what not to do as well as what to do.
The Australian Writers' Centre is fantastic for writers of all levels, from aspiring to published. Because the tutors are authors themselves, they give solid industry advice as well as writing inspiration, which is essential for building a long-term career as an author.
Bernadette was extraordinary. She is enthusiastic, funny, authentic, and generous with her knowledge. She's also so darn likeable. I enjoyed every video as well as her feedback. The feedback in particular was detailed, knowledgeable and insightful. Bernadette's expertise and personality really make this course incredibly engaging and effective and, even though with three children I felt overwhelmed at times, I enjoyed the whole experience.
I enjoyed Bernadette's teaching style. The way the course effectively chunked down steps and activities and focused on priorities in a pragmatic but also optimistic way was also very well done.
It was very comprehensive and told you exactly what a good short story is and what it isn't, as well as the current trends in short story writing.
I enjoyed the fact that I could work on a project during the course and see how much better it was at the end compared to the start. I really liked that I was able to get feedback from Cathie Tasker as well.
I feel like I have a good grasp of the short story form and can make an impact with my writing.
My undergrad is English literature. Business English is very different to story writing, and this was made very clear over the two mornings. The inverted pyramid literally flips my background on its head. However it makes perfect sense.
Grant was a very approachable trainer and certainly knew his subject. His background in journalism made him a very believable teacher.
It was an enjoyable few hours. I certainly learnt a few things that will help me moving forwards. The course is a very good introduction to business writing.
Comprehensive and encouraging. Everything was covered. Taught me the value of transitions. Step-by-step showed me how to put a feature together.
I found that doing the course highlighted my strengths, but much more importantly showed me my flaws in a professional way. Now I can confidently work hard towards being a published writer.
The Australian Writers' Centre is professional and exceeds expectations. Their approach is systematic, designed to get your work to a professional standard and published as soon as possible. I intend to continue training with them as long as necessary. The courses are well priced and within the reach of most people (I'm a pensioner).
Grant is an expert in the subject matter but not on a soap box. He was easy to interact with, and seemed like an active listener, active learner who wants to share his experiences and empower others.
The small group setting is invaluable. I had several aha! moments and will put what I've learned into immediate action.
A lot of what I learned in my social studies is not applicable to business writing and needs to go out the window. I feel empowered to disregard those old rules and focus on readability and getting my CTA across.
Excellent value for any writer looking to refresh or up their game.
I have been meaning to write on how to help organisations recruit more women into leadership, and I thought this course was what I was waiting for, having undertaken three courses with AWC already.
The podcasts were so practical and relatable to my lifestyle. I am very motivated to complete this book for which I have 10,000 words already.
I am now on my way, firmly determined to complete my book on how businesses can recruit more women into leadership.
They know how to get you there so just go for it with AWC!
The online tutor Vivienne was absolutely wonderful. She exuded calmness and warmth in her welcome video and consistently gave useful, constructive criticism using the 'psychological sandwich' approach (positive comment, constructive comment, positive comment). Vivienne acknowledged every student's comments by liking them and responding to them. When I asked a couple of questions in the chat section the responses that I received were really comprehensive and helpful. Vivienne was also generous in sharing personal anecdotes about her freelance writing journey where appropriate. Just a wonderful, wonderful tutor.
The course was well paced and accessible. The materials were of a high quality. I liked listening to Valerie's audio in each module. She goes through the materials in a comprehensive and engaging way and often uses humour to illustrate or emphasise certain points, which I loved. Valerie is generous about what she knows and extremely positive and encouraging.
I now understand how to write a good hook, the importance of transitions and how to 'show rather than tell'.
What I really appreciated was the idea that you don't have to be the best writer in the world, that what is crucial if you want to be a freelancer is that you are reliable, submit work on time and write to the word count (or a little over).
The AWC freelance writing course is excellent. The course content is of high quality and student learning is scaffolded each week as one module builds on from the next. I cannot speak more highly of our tutor Vivienne who created a warm and safe learning environment from the outset, and who provided feedback on written work which was insightful and constructive. Usually in life I do things the hard way and was researching expensive professional writing degrees before I came across the AWC freelance writing course. I am so glad that I settled on this course because in five short weeks it has given me industry knowledge, practical skills and the confidence to make a start on my freelance writing journey.
Just a truly wonderful course! Thank you.
I really liked that the course was succinct but had great tips. I enjoyed the information and no nonsense delivery.
This course will give you the confidence to get started.
I most enjoyed the detailed nature of the audio presentations and the helpful handouts. I was especially attracted by the opportunity to receive feedback on my completed story from the course designer, Cathie Tasker, who is so well respected in her field.
It's great to learn new skills after spending months (okay, years) writing my first novel. The change of pace and the satisfaction of seeing a completed work so quickly has really refreshed my writing - and my enthusiasm to keep going.
AWC courses are good value, high quality and great fun. Just sign up and get going!
The course exceeded my expectations. Very clear examples of new concepts, repetition where it was needed, well-structured exercises.
I am feeling much better equipped to write believable dialogue. The part on register made so much sense but I had never thought about how to intentionally express it in my dialogue before.
Whatever you need to make your writing better, whenever you need a firmer theoretical understanding of a concept or technique, AWC has a well-considered, well-paced course for you.
I always wanted to publish my writing... Hence, it felt that the course was appropriate!
The course teaches how to be a published writer on such a great platform. What can be better than this?! The most enjoyable part for me was the course has paved my dream path!
I would definitely recommend people to join a course so that they get to learn from such great people! Thank You Australian Writers' Centre.
I had stalled with my writing in recent years but this course has reignited my love of writing and again I feel the joy of creating new manuscripts.
I loved receiving the feedback in such a timely manner and always edited my text while the feedback was fresh.
This course is well paced and very informative. It will help you polish and fine tune your work.
Thanks to everyone involved and I am so glad I did this course.
This course helped me focus on what I was actually writing, not only the word count. It also helped me realise just how easy it is to write 10,000 + words in such a short time.
I enjoyed logging on and finding the next day's challenge and establishing what works best for myself, like what time of day to write.
I now realise I can do it, it's no longer just a dream, but a reality! It is possible to sit and write 500 words in less than 30 minutes, that the words just roll from my mind to the keyboard.
Do it, don't delay. I have used every excuse under the sun due to fear of failure, not being good enough but this course, and others I have completed, have shown me that it's the process, the joy, discovering one's individual style. Go for it! You never know what may be lurking in that creative pool of yours!
