What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
This course covered exactly what I was hoping/expecting/needing it to. Carli was very knowledgeable and laid out the material in a logical and functional way.
I enjoyed learning the basics of what UX writing is, and how I can use this skill in the future.
The course covered all the aspects I expected it to, the delivery was professional and convenient (from home!) and I learned what I had hoped to.
I really like the idea of a self-paced course. I have been writing a chapter book, but needed to make sure I was following the right path.
I really enjoyed this course. I realised my language I was using for my chapter book was too old and my sentences too long. Lesley provides information in an easy-to-follow format which makes it easy to put things into place for my own writing.
I have amended my chapter book to suit my audience more. I am now able to finish this book and move onto my next idea.
The AWC has lots of great information available on a huge variety of courses. Some are self-paced and others facilitated by an online teacher. There's fantastic value to be gained from the Australian Writers' Centre. Just take a look!
I found the breakdown formula presented was easy to understand and mould my own work around. It took the guess work out of crafting a great short story.
I now have a checklist to go back over after I've written something. Not being a huge plotter myself, I can finish now and then edit with confidence knowing what points I'm looking for at what point in the story, and if it's not meeting the formula I can go back and change it.
I'm so happy I found you guys. You'll never regret your choice to do an AWC course.
Bernadette is an excellent teacher and a pro at copywriting and the industry. Her teaching style, feedback, mindset-building, and support are fantastic. Listening to her is really inspiring and made me want not only to become a much better copywriter but gave me the confidence to do it on my own.
Go for it! All of the AWC copywriting courses are fantastic!
I enjoyed the specific information and discussions about YA issues and audiences. The course has given me so much practical guidance for writing YA.
I was really moved by the audio on the importance of hope in YA writing and the responsibilities of a YA writer to their audience.
AWC gives the tools and guidance for writers to gain the skills needed in their craft.
Thank you!
I love Pamela's Focus On seminars. Pamela is an engaging presenter who very clearly explains the ideas and gives practical examples that bring the theory to life. I always learn something from these seminars and this one was no exception.
Enrol in one of their courses - you won't regret it! You will learn something from every seminar or workshop you attend.
I enjoyed Creative Writing Stage 1 and was motivated to continue on my writing journey with AWC.
I was so impressed with Bernadette's knowledge and professional feedback. She was so helpful with her comments and encouraged students to ask questions if they needed any clarification. I feel very lucky to have had her as our online tutor.
I really enjoyed reading and providing feedback on the other students' work. There were so many great stories amongst the group, lovely writers and lovely people.
I have a lot more to learn AND a lot to work on, but I feel more confident now that my story is one worth writing and may be of interest to others to read.
I would say that if you want to get moving on a story you have in your head, enrol in this course. It will give you the motivation to start making your dream a reality, and you'll meet some amazing like-minded people along the way.
This course has helped me gain confidence in my writing and I have learnt a lot about how to develop characters and scenes.
I found Louisa extremely professional and her constructive criticism was always helpful to assist us in developing the skills needed to continue our passion for writing. The feedback from Louisa was the most enjoyable for me and reading the other writers work was also very enjoyable.
It was very insightful to be able to learn from not just Louisa but the other writers as well. The feedback given to the other writers helped me in shaping my work accordingly.
This course has really helped me to understand how to develop and construct my stories. Being exposed to other possible novice writers is inspiring and helps to feed the desire to continue.
I look forward to doing more courses with AWC.
I am new to marketing and I wanted to gain some skills that could help me get better in this area. I have done a course with AWC in the past and I liked the structure you guys follow.
With this course, I gained some valuable insights that I don't think I would have been able to gain so soon in my career. I loved the assignments! They were equal parts fun and engaging.
I am looking forward to doing many more courses here!
I am trying to gain more variety when writing character's reactions to things, rather than the same old tropes. I thought this course might prove useful for that.
Pamela is just so personable and enthusiastic. She has a way of imparting information so that it doesn't feel patronising and every word she says is useful!
It has made me think more about how my characters would think and respond to things based on their feelings and emotions based on their past experience.
I'd highly recommend AWC courses due to their accessibility and ease of learning. The handouts are great and complement the seminars. There's also such a variety of courses, there is something for everyone.
Louisa was encouraging at all times but with constructive feedback. Everything she passed on to me/us helped me to improve each week.
I really liked creating the characters and describing a setting.
I feel ready to write more and maybe enrol in another course down the track.
I enjoyed this 5-week course and learned so much. It was relaxed and I didn't feel any pressure to succeed, just enjoyed letting my mind create.
I appreciated Alex's real-world experience and knowledge that influenced her feedback. Her insightful and thoughtful assessment feedback gave me insight into what an editor is thinking and wanting to see from my work.
I really appreciated the video recorded feedback about not only my work, but the rest of the course participants. This allowed me to not only learn from my own assessments, but also from what everyone else was doing.
I've started seriously working towards my freelance writing career and I'm working on my first article and pitch email since the course's completion.
Valerie Khoo's informational, interesting and honest course content is to the point, easy to digest and enjoyable. You can hear just how passionate she is about the industry and really wants to see the best from us. She is a great person to look up to for inspiration throughout the course.
I had a couple of children's stories which I had submitted to publishers but never received responses. I saw this AWC course advertised, and it sounded practical.
I feel that I have a greater awareness of direct language, economising with words, punctuation, showing rather than telling and revealing feelings. Cathie looked closely at my work and provided useful feedback.
This is a practical course which offers useful writing tips for children's picture books.
I've heard good things about this course online from graduates and felt that it was a general good overview to writing, seeing that I was a bit confused as to which styles of books I wanted to write (middle grade, YA etc). I love that there was feedback provided to the exercises which attracted me also.
Louisa was fantastic! She has great insight into writing and provided very good constructive feedback to my writing. She was honest, straight to the point and gave us emotional support through her responses when we as a collective would ask how do we keep pushing through with writing when we have self-doubt etc.
I feel strong and confident in my writing and have used the knowledge from the course to start writing a few drafts already.
Thank you Louisa for having faith in me and my writing! I feel confident in my abilities and thank you for accepting my quirky and silly style of writing!
The tutor was very knowledgeable. Great and specific feedback that was helpful and with examples to show me how to go about making the changes also.
I enjoyed receiving the feedback from Cathie. I felt the written support material was comprehensive and helpful also.
I think I have the skills now to adapt my writing for children's books and I definitely have the knowledge to take my writing further if I wish.
The course is worth it for the money and what you get out of it. You will gain knowledge from it you can't get anywhere else.
Bringing characters to life through the senses is a technique I'm currently developing through my short stories. Having completed several AWC short courses I was confident that I'd glean a wealth of new knowledge from this seminar, and I did!
Pamela clearly explored more than just the 5 senses. It was quite an epiphany! I was also fascinated to learn about aphantasia and how to work with it (I suspect I have it and didn't realise).
The body is central to the narrative, and the reader must be engaged through the character's emotional and sensory experiences of settings and situations.
All AWC courses are 'user friendly', regardless of your level of experience or skill. They are practical and easily applicable to a variety of writing genres.
I enjoyed Pamela's obvious experience and wisdom, her engagement - passion for the topic and ability to think on her feet. She's very well prepared and clearly enjoys what she is doing... it's always inspiring.
This presenter is pure gold, in terms of both substance and manner ;)
Pamela offered a huge amount of interesting information and presented it in a warm, easy-to-understand way with plenty of examples. The handouts were very informative.
I will endeavour to significantly increase sensory material in my writing and I can see that it will add considerable depth to my work. It also helped me to better understand how good writers create distinctive, well-drawn characters and scenes.
The AWC is the go-to place in Australia for high-quality writing courses covering a wide range of topics, formats and pricing.
User friendly and informative with good examples. It is easy to refer to when required.
The Australian Writers' Centre offers functional and easy to follow courses that would suit anyone wanting to learn or improve on their writing skills. The staff are easily contactable and friendly.
After taking a travel writing course with the Australian Writers' Centre, I took up the mentoring opportunity with the Freelance Writing Masterclass Program for over a year.
While I was confident of my writing abilities, I found writing pitches to publications really difficult. Being able to send draft pitches for review in the one-on-one pitch sessions was extremely useful. They were key in honing my skills and (finally) getting me to think from an editor's perspective and deliver the elements they're looking for.
Valerie has the ability to really cut through to identify a problem with a pitch and provides very specific suggestions for how to rectify and improve a pitch. I still find it the most difficult part of travel writing, but my skills really improved during this period.
Valerie is forthright in her feedback but considered and accurate and ultimately very helpful. She's in your corner and wants you to succeed. There are also other opportunities to ask questions, glean titbits of useful information and be involved in a community of supportive writers and there is a wealth of information in the library of resources. While I ummed and ahhed about enrolling in the program at the beginning, I'm really pleased I did.
