What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
Grant was really engaging with the information available and is very knowledgeable. I've been able to take out a few things to implement into my writing.
A very interesting and engaging course.
I have found the practical tips on how to manage potential challenges on building a freelance business and also how to go about starting to obtain copywriting work invaluable.
Bernadette has been an excellent tutor, both in terms of course delivery and the feedback provided on the assignments.
The assignments have forced me (in a good way) to apply the theory learnt and have given me the encouragement to develop my copywriting skills further.
The AWC is a super friendly and supportive community with great courses.
I found Lesley to be very clear, encouraging and practical in her delivery of the course.
I enjoyed researching chapter books from the library and being able to then relate Lesley's modules with those same chapter books.
It has inspired me again to go back and rewrite one of my series ideas.
For the first time I understood the importance of considering how difficult it can be for early readers who are working hard to read without assistance. I loved reading as a kid and can't remember the work involved. It has shifted my thinking back to a space of making the stories accessible to early readers.
These courses are a great way to discover or rediscover a love of writing. They provide a framework for growing your craft at a reasonable price.
Cathie is very knowledgeable and is not afraid to give honest feedback. She is kind and approachable. I'm so glad that she was the tutor for this course. She is an exceptional teacher.
Sharing my manuscripts with the other students has been invaluable. It's given me the confidence to keep writing and the desire to continue learning. And I've met some wonderful people and read some fabulous pieces of writing along the way.
I've learnt that there is so much to know about writing. You can't just sit down and write a book. This is a fun way to learn and to be continuously inspired.
I found the course was very well put together. It was very organic in how it introduced us to creative writing and I could see how the various topics and their assessment really helped in building up to the final task of being able to write a scene. Having small, manageable assessment tasks that we had a week to complete was very helpful and having the course chat meant that if I ever felt overwhelmed I could discuss any concerns with my peers and our instructor.
Nat Newman was fantastic. They appeared to approach each submission with the same level of enthusiasm and genuine care. They offered both positive and constructive feedback while giving very intuitive suggestions on how to not only improve on a specific assessment task, but also how we could go about improving and developing our writing in general. I think they were also very good at recognising themes for each submission. They not only adapted really well to our unique writing styles but also our skill levels and how and when we needed feedback on any issues we might be experiencing. They were encouraging and prompt with any questions in the course chat. They also posted and shared a lot of helpful videos and anything that might help improve our writing in general.
I enjoyed listening to the modules and being able to learn in what felt like a very safe and inclusive space.
I think I have a lot more confidence in my writing. With the knowledge I have gained I feel that I am better equipped to worry less and write more.
It's amazing and worth doing if you wish to get serious about your writing.
It was very comprehensive and covered topics I did not realise I needed to find out more about.
The tutor was very knowledgeable and gave good constructive criticism. I learnt a lot: how to structure a story, look at tenses, show not tell, be concise, point of view and consistency.
Just a big thank you for all the structured feedback, this is where the learning happens. The feedback each week was crucial.
Bernadette is very well versed in her knowledge of copywriting.
The whole course was a world of discovery for me. Compact, loaded with information, a great way to head into a writing career. It has given me a path to follow.
Bernadette is an amazing tutor - the full package: great presentation skills with an amazing depth of knowledge.
It's made me reevaluate my writing, it's given me greater confidence and it's also given me a better process. I feel like I was a good copywriter and now, armed with this material, if I work on applying it, I have the potential to become a great copywriter. When you're a writer, it's part of how you see yourself, it's really part of who you are, so to be given tools that will help you become even better, it really is life-changing.
The tutor was experienced, concise, helpful. I enjoyed the course handouts and audios.
I am a beginner, so it gave me the essentials and a very realistic idea of the process of writing a novel.
Great course for all levels of writers, comfortable workload, valuable feedback.
I did the basic copywriting course and knew I wanted to take it further. Love Bernadette's teaching style and humour :) 100% great teacher and fascinating person.
My investment in this course and the last one I did has given me the confidence and commitment to take this to the highest level.
I am a Copywriter!!
The AWC is the best place to go if you want to learn to write without going to Uni or spending a fortune.
Content, delivery and course management was delivered in an encouraging but non-threatening way - important for those of us who are still unsure and self-conscious about writing creatively, even for ourselves.
Nat's awesome! Great at the feedback sandwich - positive comments-constructive criticism-positive comments. A wonderful tutor for people who are tentatively starting out on their writing journey. She helped create a warm, positive and supportive learning group.
I enjoyed the writing assignments! Particularly those that gave parameters in which I would not normally write, eg the detective scenario, developing purely descriptive passages.
After so many years of corporate writing, it's opened up the possibility of creating something from my imagination - something I hadn't done since I was a child and to which I didn't think I'd ever return.
The Australian Writers' Centre is the only resource I could find that offers a range of courses for all kinds of writers at all stages of their journey. The courses are extremely well-researched and professionally presented but still accessible in content and welcoming in approach.
Pamela is always succinct, communicates very well and really knows her stuff.
It has helped me attend to dimensions of my writing that I would otherwise not have thought to reflect on.
I'd probably recommend anything taught by Pamela!
Valerie's audios on this course have been invaluable. Nat's feedback was practical as well as encouraging. She gave me a lot of confidence.
Today, I 'slam' down on Draft 1 of my historical fiction novel. I've set myself a writing goal (a la Stephen King) of 3 months for an 80,000 word draft. I thought I had it going along nicely, but I was procrastinating! But I'm glad I didn't get into it too far, even though I'd already done extensive planning, because I realised my protagonist needs to be another character. The one with more at stake, and incidentally the one I like more.
Do the tutor-led courses. Getting qualified feedback is essential.
Bernadette is an amazing tutor who is extremely knowledgeable and delivers her content in an articulate and personable manner. Her feedback is thorough and constructive.
Every module was valuable and interesting, as well as being clear and easy to navigate with great presentation. I also looked forward to receiving my personalised feedback on assignments. The course provided me with the tools and confidence I needed to go on and niche as an email marketing specialist.
Pamela is extremely knowledgeable in her craft but also she is a wonderful presenter. She keeps to the schedule and answers all the questions effectively.
I have attended a number of AWC short courses both in person and online, and I would highly recommend AWC as a wonderful place to start your writing journey. The courses are very helpful to both educate and motivate you. The AWC community is friendly and fun. The podcasts, weekly email, FB community, Furious Fiction and courses, all provide a great place for people interested in reading and writing books.
I thought it was time to invest in my passion for writing after listening to some of the presentations at AWC. I liked the fact that Cathie Tasker had so much experience in publishing.
This course helped me realise how much I didn't know about writing, even though I have always considered myself a good writer!
I loved being challenged every week. I also felt that the course was presented very well. I liked the fact that I felt I was actually learning how to write a better story. I appreciated Cathie's honesty when evaluating my assignments.
I now look at every book I read in a completely different light (including adult novels!) I notice obvious things that I had previously missed.
Pamela is a wonderful presenter and knows her stuff. Also the questions time was helpful.
It assured me that I am doing it right and gave me ideas about what to watch out for in my scenes.
If you want to write and do it well, do a course with the AWC.
Pamela is so knowledgeable and engaging. And her enthusiasm is contagious. *rubs hands together* 'Right let's get started!'
My story has been like a surly cat glaring at me from the corner of my office for too long. (I'm a dog person.) Now I really want to get to it again!
Take a look at AWC. There are answers to whatever size question you have.
I need to shorten my novel. When I wrote it I thought I needed all of the words, and didn't know how to go about a restructure rewrite. This seminar provides a useful tool. Pamela is really good at getting the messages across.
Don't hesitate. The AWC is a good motivator - it helps to get past the slough of despond. The passion of lecturers and speakers is great and the online materials are excellent. Thank you!
Pamela Freeman never fails to provide value for money with a richness of content, generosity and depth of wisdom, and content that is understandable and so actionable.
I finally understand all the elements of pacing!!
Go for a Pamela Freeman class. She is not only a successful multi-published author but she has great communication skills in imparting her knowledge on so many aspects of writing. She is also generous with her time.
